Steve,
Funny you should bring up Elk hunting in Forest Park.............about 3 years ago, I was heading West on hwy. 26 out of the tunnel.........there is a spot just before the Zoo exit that is a very wide spot off to the North that has a draw coming off the hill. I look over and lo and behold, there is a 5x5 bull standing in the opening of the draw! I though that it must be an Elk that had escaped from the Zoo since it was in such close proximity to the area that the Elk are contained in. I called 911 and told the dispatcher the story and that I was concerned that the Elk could wander to the hwy. and present a serious traffic problem. The dispatcher said the Elk had been spotted in that area for A few weeks. Imagine.....this area is less than one mile from Downtown Portland, and still near homes. Obviously, Forest Park (which to those that don't know, is the largest public park within the city limits of any city in America) contains all kinds of wildlife, but to think that an Elk would stand 100 yards from a major crowded highway and take it in stride is astonishing. To those who would call BS, this is truly a real account! Deer are a common occurrence, but anyone who has hunted Elk knows of their fear of humans and will run for miles to escape.
