If it's so cold that a .22 won't reliably kill a critter, you should probably stay home, and wait it out. Deliberately travelling/hunting in Alaska when it's just silly cold out, sounds tough, romantic, etc....but most folks who've been here any length of time, know when you're better off just staying home, until it warms up. Unless you just like to break your snow machine, gear, etc. Not to mention, yourself.

This. Sit tight and weather it. No point in braving -40 to -55 degrees C when you could sit tight and wait a little for the weather to break. It's challenging to be out in that weather, to say the least.
