I am setting up a Ruger No.1 for "Big Bore" use. I have New England Custom peep sight and will be installing a limesaver.
What are some top loads to work up to using the
400-405 grain bullets? I have used RE 7 with the 405. thanks Elmer.

Half-minute accuracy, while pleasant to observe, is in no way superior to one-minute accuracy in any serious rifle.

I can offer you a "varmint" load... I tried max loads of 4198 with a 300 gr Rem JHP and my chrony blew 2600... Absolutely vaporizes groundhogs... It does absolutely hurt to shoot this load without a sissy pad in this light gun.

I have the NECG's... never got them to work or I don't know how to make them work. I ran out of windage...

I took a Marlin 95 to Africa with me, and used 47grs 4198 in back of the 405gr Winchester. This gave (we recently had a chance to chronograph it) 1900fps to that bullet. I'd think you could buck it up a few grains in a #1, but I'd get a premium bullet as the 405 Winchester turned in to flat pieces of lead on impact.

Might want to try some IMR 3031 under a Cast Performance 405. Starline brass & Fed LR Match Primers were used for this group.

I also use 53.0 of 3031 under Hornady 300JHP for a sub-MOA field load.

36.5 grains of IMR 4198 under a REM 300JHP makes a 1 MOA plinker, that is cheap, & a real pussey cat to shoot. Suspect the 4198 would also make a great business load as well, but have not got around to serious load development w/ it.

I think my load was 63 grains of H4198. A grain under max according to Hogdon's manual. I have yet to shoot all of the first (and only) batch of 50 I loaded or ever will load that way again.

H4198 must be one interesting powder.

4064 was always the 45/70 405gr powder for me, Safe and sane in #1s or 1895s the limiting factor is recoil. Best of luck, Bill
