I have had the new rifle itch for a while now, but don't really need one. I have 4 calibers already. I was looking for a nice clean wood stock, at a reasonable price.

Anyways, having bought a Savage a few years ago, for my kids, I have used it, and I was SOLD on Savage.

So my next was going to be a Savage American Classic - caliber not decided yet.

However, I have been reading/looking at the Mossberg Patriot lately - nothing but good things I might add, and reasonably priced.

Thoughts?

A friend of mine won a Savage American Classic in .308 at a local gun bash when Savage first introduced them. Her husband built a lighted wall mounted display case for it. NICE!

Well, they are priced right for sure. I think the only ones on GB that are over $400 are the Marinecote models. They had a Deer Thug model adjustable for length of pull using spacers.

I'm not a Savage guy by any stretch of the imagination, but the Classic I handled a few years back was very nicely finished with a handsome stock. If I were looking for a "keeper", the Savage would be my choice. It's also twice as much money.

I saw this and I noted some things that this guy had to say did not make sense, such as he says the gun is on the same level with his remmy 700....then promptly compares it to that gun repeatedly.

Also his comments about the bolt wiggle at the rear are just wrong. Mausers and many others have that much wiggle (I once had an Ithaca/Tikka and it was that bad, yet the gun shot cloverleafs)

The polymer mag is understandable from a procurement point of view, as that mag in polymer would cost pennies, while the same mag in metal would many times that, when amortized over the build life of the gun

However, this is not a total defense of the patriot. The flutes are there for looks me-thinks, and a gun at this price level is going to have all the plastic they can cram on it, you just have to way it out. It may not be the best DG gun or Tactical-bet-your-butt rifle, but any gun from 10 or more years ago, now sold as used, will sell for more than the cost of the Patriot new.

There's no heirloom material here, that's certain. They may be solid enough, but 10 years from now, when Mossberg has moved on to something else yet again, magazines will be hard or impossible to find, and there won't be enough rifles out there to make it feasible for a third party to go to the expense of making molds to produce new ones. It's unlikely that enough Patriots will be sold to create a demand for other aftermarket accessories and parts either. The price point is attractive, but anyone contemplating something like this ought to look down the road a bit. The Rugers have sold well enough to generate some aftermarket activity and the Marlin XS seems to have a following as well with the added attraction of easy barrel swaps. If I were looking for a bargain rifle, I'd lean towards one of them.

Or, I might just pick up one of the many Remington pumps to be found around here for from $325-$450. 3 million Pennsylvanians can't all be wrong.
