Don't forget about Ramshot Hunter. I bought a stainless Hawkeye a couple weeks ago and tried H4831 with every bullet I had. I even shimmed it hoping that floating would cure all issues. It didn't...

Then I tried Hunter over a magnum primer. It shoots nice little triangles now..

Some yrs. back when H 4831 went into the dumper for velocity I switched to IMR 7828 and have had NO REASON to look for anything else.

I like 55grs. of RE22 with the Hornady 150 BTSP. Killed many deer with that load. Or 57grs of IMR4831 with the same bullet.

My favorite load for my .270's is 56 gr. IMR 4831 and Remington Core-Lokt 130 grain bullets

Here are a couple of targets that I shot the same day, using the same load.
first one is 7 rounds from my Tikka T3, second group was from my Ruger #1.
I've been using this load for almost 30 years in a number of .270's and it always works well. A little slow.........but nice groups and does the trick on game.

Interesting,I tried VV-N165 in my Super Grade and accuracy along with speed improved.

Actually in my 3-.270 Winchesters,don't use H-4831 in any of them. In my .270 Wby it's RL-25 IIRC. The info is in a shed and right now to lazy to get it.

I don't recall the particulars per H 4831 as to yrs and who/where it was manufactured.

IIRC (?) in the 80s H 4831 was manufactured ?somewhere? and Mule Deer told me and others in an OLD thread that the velocity was not up to expectations. Sometime later H 4831 was manufactured somewhere else (?) and is today. This latest H 4831 is closer to "normal" than the earlier stuff.

From the posts of others on the fire including M D, the newer stuff seems pretty good.

BUT after buying several diff lots back in the 80s I guess I became 'gun shy' and ain't interested in risking it anymore.

I've been using 7828 a lotta yrs and have seen little deviation from lot-lot. IMO accuracy is superb and more than sufficient for hunting and close enuff for most varmints. Now we don't have PDs but from Groundhogs (marmots) up 7828 does very well. (in 270 W)

I chronographed the loads the same day I shot the groups.
Tikka gave 2820 fps, Ruger was 2875 fps.

I thought it was strange...............same load, same day, 55 fps difference. Admittedly, the ruger was a few years old with a couple hundred bullets down the barrel, the Tikka was new with less than 20 rounds through it.

Still got the Tikka, traded the Ruger for a 7x57 #1 International

I used WW brass and primers. C.O.A.L was 3.340"

Have 5 lbs of the SC version of H-4831 and I don't get the accuracy and velocity that I did when I had 8 lb keg of the "long cut" that I bought in the early 90's.

Been using 7828 since it became available in the mid-late 80's. Right now,use in a .25/06 with a 100 gr Sierra FB along with some other cartridges. It's one of my favorite powders.

yeah, 2825-2875 is on the slow side for a 270 W however a lot of game has been/is killed with 'slower' bullets. They are just not my choice.

I admit that for MOST of my hunting that is fast enuff and dependable for killin stuff.

OTOH I'm used to getting 3100 and + out of the 270 AND I'm already used to THAT trajectory. From 0 out to 400 yds. I don't have to wonder what's the range? where do I hold?

NO the 270 is NOT dead on 0-400 yds, I just KNOW my rifle, load, bullet, & trajectory so.....

Anywho- those were good groups you shot and as long as that load fits your needs--you don't need anything else.

Sniper you might find those velocity spreads tighten up if you increased the charges a grain or two. Based on your velocity you seem to have a bit of room.

Not uncommon to see a 270 behave that way when you're a couple hundred fps below a normal "max". Then again it shoots fine so...I'm just explaining away your velocity spreads.....please continue.

I'm pretty happy with the way this load shoots..........haven't recovered a bullet yet.

When I feel the need for more speed, I have a load with 61 grains of H-4831 and the 140 grain Swift A-Frame that gives 2950 fps. It doesn't give quite as nice groups, but works well enough for me.
