I'd have to charge $500 per vehicle to put up with someone that can't mount a frigging scope.

I know, I also wouldn't want to deal with those that return pissed off because they missed a deer at 250 yards. Because they NEVER shot the rifle.
I've seen it first hand at a gunshop.

I remember the one explosion I had. A guy asked me how many inches high on the target his bullets needed to be at 25 yards to be dead on at 100 yards.
I told him probably 1/2" low at 25 yards.

Not squarely on point but you can see their thinking on this. Yes. ATF is kind of hard to predict.

I do know that mounting in conjunction with bore sighting is illegal in certain parts of Utah.

Talked to an agent out of the Dallas office today. He plainly stated he had no idea if it was legal or not.

Don't keep the gun overnight and don't let the owner leave and you don't have a problem. If you lived in a state like Colorado where a transfer is deemed to have taken place if the owner steps out of the room you'd have to take extra steps to handcuff the owner to a chair in the room or something.. ATF: Section 921(a)(11)(B) defines a “dealer,” in relevant part, as any person engaged in the business of repairing firearms or of making or fitting special barrels, stocks, or trigger mechanisms to firearms.” A person meeting this definition is commonly referred to as a “gunsmith.”

In WA, you'd be f'ked as soon as you held the rifle.
ATF rules are one thing, but there are some jackass states out there with rules of their own folks ought to be aware of.

I have always thought that doing repair work was NOT 'taking custody' of the gun.
Of course, Florida has virtually NO gun laws, in comparison to other States.

I would make a careful search of the premises, to verify that the SCOPE MOUNTING POLICE were not lurking. If they were not present, I would proceed with the scope mount procedure.

When I was younger, a couple a beers in me, I'd mount damn near anything without regard to a license or a fee.

That included livestock, to be sure. Though, in Michigan, there ain't much difference...

The word "lurking" should be used more often, it is an excellent word. "She didn't courtesy flush and I saw a couple of pepperoni's lurking in the toilet." I just bought a "scope mounting police" scanner from Cabela's today so I should be good to go.

My friends get free scope mounting. My advertised service is all about making money to fund a 6.5-06 build, an AR in .260 Remington and a Winchester Model 21 16 gauge. I make no apology for it.

Those who say don't keep it overnight, where do you find that exception to "gunsmith" as the ATF uses the term?
Chances of getting in trouble with the ATF (state is another matter) are pretty slim particularly if it's all word of mouth. I look at it as risk/reward. IF you get challenged by the ATF you could end up in a world of hurt. Worth it for the few shekels you can pick up on the side?

I'm waiting to hear back from the ATF. If they say it is a no-no then I won't. One thing I was never going to do though is keep firearms overnight.
