To be honest it doesn't taste that great. You've got to have it if you're there though.

Scott, Have been all over Germany on trains. But, never spent time there. It's very high up on the to see list. If you have time, I would recommend your using the European trains as city to city transport. You will be amazed at what you see out the windows between locales. Oh, btw, if available, it's typically worth the couple extra bucks to get an upgrade over the lowest level of passage. i.e: tier 2 or 3. You'll be glad you did.

I could go on for hours about Europe. I love it. The history is whacking you in the face everywhere you turn. It's hard not to turn around and see something 1000 years old several times a day that makes your jaw drop and leaves your speechless.

When you close in more on your destinations, I'd be glad to offer any help I can. I would recommend not using hotels as much as possible. You get far better accommodations renting directly from owners or consolidators/sublessors than you will ever get from hotels. And for the most part, you save a ton of money. It gives you more $$$ to spend on little extra things like tours, souvenirs, special meals, side trips, etc.

I'm not offering up any specific destinations because, in the end, that's a personal choice. Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Holland, Belgium and Greece are places I have visited. Of those mentioned, I would return to all except Greece. Greek scenery can be great in spots (ex: Santorini, Acropolis, Crete), but the food and drink aren't memorable for the most part, and travel is harder than anywhere else I've been.

Most of western europe is extremely convenient, it's easier to get around than in the U.S. I don't find them non-friendly at all. Paris probably has a reputation for being the most unfriendly european city. I'm in Paris on average about twice a month and have yet to meet an unfriendly Parisian, they're far nicer than the average New Yorker. I'm just a bubba from buttcrack Mississippi but even I can say 'Merci'. If you treat them with a bit of common courtesy then they'll do the same. If you show up with an obnoxious attitude which sadly some American tourists exhibit then you'll get treated like you're an a$$hole.

Bingo!

My wife's mother is from the UK but though I have, she has no real interest in going there.

France, Spain, and Portugal interest me and the forests of Eastern Europe intrigue me as well as a good part of the hinterlands of Russia. Germany is great. What history throughout all of Europe! Language should not be a problem in almost all of Western Europe.

And actually, where Pete E lives looks glorious to me on MAPS.

Went to Ireland in August a few years back, and would go back in a heartbeat. If you draw a line from Galway to Dublin, I was mostly south of there. Great food, great beer, really nice folks, and a lot of history if you're into that. My wife toured most of Europe years ago, and swore Vienna and Salzburg were the most beautiful cities she'd ever seen, but she wants to move to Ireland. Take it for what it's worth.

Been all over Europe from Copenhagen to Barcelona. Been to Barcelona twice. Got sick both times. Won't go back.

Love Germany and have traveled north to south. Bavaria is my favorite place on the Continent to visit.

I like Holland and a visit to Harlem (outside Amsterdam) is very nice. The food in Holland is nothing to brag about. Not sure if they have a national dish. I stayed with seafood. Dutch people speak very good English. The property owners are known for keeping their places clean and orderly.

When going to work, I would fly to Amsterdam and take the train to wherever in Europe I need to go. I really enjoy European train travel.

I don't classify England as Europe and we all know how important it is to see England. A beautiful country.

If someone were to offer me a ticket to anywhere in Europe tomorrow, I would go to Bavaria. Once there, Austria and Switzerland is just over the hill...

I bet you find unfriendly people wherever you travel........

im guessing cause thats far from what ive heard from family and friends spending time over there...generally if your not an arsehole to people and if there is a language issue atleast try instead of demanding they speak english to accommodate and things tend to go smooth...

Haven't seen Luxembourg mentioned. Great little country with some amazingly friendly and accommodating people. The fortresses and walls around Luxembourg city were nice to see. A stop by Patton's grave on the way out of country is pretty cool as well.

Spent 3 years in Germany. My favorite towns were Luxembourg city; Trier and Koln (Cologne) Germany; Amsterdam and Scheveningen, Holland; and Belgium. Had a girlfriend in Holland for a year or so, and spent a bit of time there. Really liked the place. A must see...Anne Frank house.

Buddy and I took a week long trip to England. Drove from Germany, took the ferry from France into Dover, and spent the next week driving all the way up to Inverness, Scotland and back. Epic trip. No plan, just drove, and stayed at bed and breakfast stops all the way. Awesome time, awesome sites, and awesome people. Sit down in a little out of the way pub for a beer, and someone hears your American accent, and you'll have all the conversation you want. Not a lick of attitude from anyone there.

As for the driving, we were white knuckling it driving on "wrong hand drive" roads for a couple days, but we got it figured out without trading paint with anyone.

Definitely some things to see in London as well.

Aside from all the other history of Europe, if you're into WWII history, you could spend a lifetime just exploring that aspect of it all.

Never made it to Normandy. A HUGE mistake. If I ever go back, I will see it.

Did visit the Cambridge American cemetery in England.

In my mid 20's, I was too stupid and young to see more. I saw a lot, but not enough for the 3 years I was there. I was busy chasing the local ladies and partying. Damn, I wish I had the chance to do it all over and let my interest in WWII and European history guide me instead of my pecker.

Never spent time in France, other than a drive through on the way to England, but it was not high on the list of things to do there at the time amongst those who had been. Having said that, I didn't see it. I can also say however, that I don't remember being disappointed in any place I did visit while in Europe. Rent a car, drive, and just go and see.

For me, it would be Greece. I am fascinated with the history, the language, those incredibly-clear blue waters and the pristine beaches of Ellada.

I was raised Czech and would like to see the CR, too, along with Spain, Austria and Portugal. But if I had to pick just one place, it would no doubt be Greece.

It's not going to happen anymore, though, as my health has deteriorated too far to allow such a trip. But I can still dream... smile

Sorry to hear that your health precludes a trip to Greece, I hope it will improve.

Greece is a real bargain right now because of the financial uncertainty and the fact that there are limits on the amount of cash that can be withdrawn per week from any Greek bank account.

A friend returned from Greece last week, and said that if you have cash, you can get a 40 to 50% discount on hotels, restaurants, taxis... just about everything!

He and his family have been to Greece before and liked it a lot, but he said that on this trip it seemed like everybody he met was determined to treat every tourist extremely well (presumably because of the financial situation has driven home the point about how important it is now!).

Got back from Norway 5 days ago and I would move there tomorrow. The scenery is amazing, the people are great, the food is really good but interesting. I never thought I would put butter, mayo (majones) from a tube, caviar from a tube, a slice of Jarlsberg cheese and sliced egg on a piece of bread and call it breakfast, but I did. The seafood was spectacular. They eat so much reindeer I was amazed. Every type of sausage imaginable. I have not been in the north but the southern parts, both east and west are jaw droppingly gorgeous.
