Both guns will have five shot cylinders of Carpenter Custom 465 stainless steel with recessed case heads. They will have 6½" barrels and the long ejector from the 10" Super Blackhawk and Hunter models. They are a distributor special, only available only through Lipsey's. Great! Just when I'm getting out of hunting handguns!

Which one would be more versatile?

I've already got 3 454's, but I only have one 480. I do believe I hear a 480 calling out my name. Now I hope that voice knows where there is some money. I'm guessing there are going to be several items coming up for sale in the classifieds to people can pick up a couple of new guns. Thank you LIPSEYS.

Which one would be more versatile? If you reload it's a wash; if you don't, the 454 would be your best bet.

...as a Distributor Exclusive I wonder if this will be a limited run or become a regular production item....
Having "owned" identical 6" Freedom Arms Model 83s in .454 and .475 and having sold both I'm not sure if this one will be for me. I'm hoping someone I know will buy a .480 so I can "try-before-you-buy"....

Based on how well the 44 Special Flat tops sold, Ruger made it a catalog item. Thinking they may end up doing this with these 2. Folks have been screaming for a 454/480 SBH for years.

I like my .480 SRH, Might have to grab one as a more packable gun.
Hopefully they will fix the problems of the bore being choked where it screws into the frame.

Thread choke is unfortunately common with Rugers. Fire lapping generally cures it.

That's what I was thinking, but I really like the thoughts of the 480 The 480 is less abussive to shoot than is 454. 45 Colt +P makes for very effective and shootable load for the 454 revolver.
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I'll have to have one of those in .480. Too bad they didn't do it in a 5.5" bbl.

They needed more barrel so they could use a longer ejector rod housing to completely push the empty cases out. I would have prefered 6" even with the ejector rod housing but they could have been just a touch shorter.

Had heard these were coming, and just watched Jeff Quinn's write up and video. I am for sure going to get one of these in 454.

O45, Jeff states in his writeup that the 480 suffered from thread choke and was a bit less accurate than the 454.

Hm, Max shot the .454 1000 times and the .480 5000 times.... think he may like one better than the other My 59 YO eyes would like a .480 in a Hunter version... or if there is a mounting system that would hold one of the better mini red dots that might even be more better....
