I have a 1952ish EG. I put a peep sight on it, so I removed the rear sight. Then I bought a lyman blank, link is below. http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/sights/12s-slot-blank.phpI am trying to work the blank in with a brass punch and it only gets as far as the picture shows. The brass punch is starting to deform with the pressure I'm using. I am wondering what's going on. I took a micrometer to the blank so I know I'm putting the slightly narrow end in first. Blanks run large. File it to fit. A triangle file works best.

What Lightfoot said. Always remove metal from the cheapest part first. Replacement sights work the same way from time to time. They make them oversize to allow for oversize tolerances in the dovetail.

Dont know where, but I remember reading that you file a blank so that you can put it in 3/4 of the way by hand, then tap it in the last 1/4.

All good advice. I'll add work slowly and patiently, with steady hand. Check the fit often. OH and take that forend off before you strike a glancing blow and mush some wood. You'll never forgive yourself if that happens.

...or use the old sight to make a fore-and-aft pointed slot filler. If it came out of the slot it'll go back in.

That's one dam expensive filler in my book. Those sights don't grow on trees. Acknowledged. But if you're like me and automatically replace all barrel sights with an aperture sight, and put them in a "sight box" only to completely forget about them and wonder 20 years later what the heck they fit and do I even have the gun anymore... I know, bag 'em and tag 'em. It's just that I always considered them to be throwaways as their utility equals about zero in my book.

Jcolby: you might like to file the bottom of the filler until it fits about 3/4 of the way in and then use an aluminum punch to drive it in all the way. and yes, everything happens from the right side of the barrel as viewed from the rear: the filler of sight goes in from the right side and comes out from the right side.
