I have not bought or picked up a new 700 in a store in some time.

Is the "Dot Matrix" symbol which is similar to a "QR" code something that is etched on all current production 700's?

They are just a butt ugly thing to have on a firearm IMHO.

Anyone know particulars about all this?

I agree. Next they will microchip their guns.

It is a 2D bar-code. There can be quite a bit of info contained there in. Most likely Serial # and manufacturing data.

Would be interesting to scan it and see what is there.

It's how they track a firearm through the manufacturing process. You can look on a computer and tell a specific gun (in this case) and see what has been done in the process, what needs to be done, exactly where the gun is physically located and which machines were used to machine the action. Odds are they can trace the specific shipment of steel used in the production of said action.

It's on every new Remington I've seen lately, not just on 700's.

It's called a "data matrix" which as others have said is a 2D barcode.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Matrix

There is a bunch of data on your gun like when it was made, where it was made, which parts were used, etc. It will help Remington be more efficient with their next massive recall.

Not a Remington but I have several Winchester M70 XTRs, a .270, a .300 Win. Mag. and a .338 Win, Mag that have stocks I would swear are McMillans. The .270 and .300 Mag. came with these stocks and the pad on the butt are marked Winchester. I replaced the pad on the .300 with a Decelerator, a much more harmonious arrangement. The .338 is a stainless classic andI replaced it with the same style stock as on the .270. It too has a Winchester logo'd butt pad. Got to replace that one as well as it kicks the bloody snot out of me.
You look on line at what stocks McMillan makes and you'll find the exact same stocks as are on my rifles. Does make one wonder.

I guess I'm old too.

I remember when everyone was raising hell about the legal disclaimers put on firearms.

***** Read Owners Manual Before Operating This Firearm*****
***** Remington Arms Co. *****

Everyone bitched about that for years.

They all do it now, but I think Remington was among the first.
