I have a Marlin 39 that appears to be in a good state of repair that I failing to extract spent cartridges from time to time. The rifle has been completely disassembled and is perfectly clean and only lightly oiled. Can it be anything other than a faulty extractor? It's an awesome little rifle but taking it apart to get cartridges out gets a little tiresome.

Chuck

I'd guess either a dirty chamber(or perhaps a rough chamber,or a lightly pitted chamber) or an extractor that is nearly spent.

Are there any lineal marks on the extracted brass,to hint at a less than sterling smooth chamber?

I'm of the opinion that 39's are pretty tough,I beat the bejeesus outta mine and they never miss a lick until the chambers are very dirty.....................

I don't remember any marks on the brass but I'll take a look. Thanks for the advice.

Chuck

Older 22's often have extraction problems because a lot of 22 shorts were fired and eroaded the chamber, causing problems when long rifle ammo is used. Sometimes this can be polished out but I haven't much luck at that. Also if the rifle was dry fired a lot the pin will indent the metal at the breach face. If you look closely you can see the dent. A smith can swage this out or you can do it yourself with a swager from Brownell's about ($20).

Good points here. Also check that the extractor is able to move all the way and is not hanging up with dirt.
