The nut behind the trigger matters too. I'd put that at or near the top of the list. I see a lot of guys at the range with poor or no proper shooting technique. They seem to have a lot of trouble lining up their rifles for 100yd shooting. Sand bags and the use of them is often a revelation. If they seem open to suggestion, I loan them my extras and try to coach them. If they are "know-it-alls" who won't take advice, I let them bang away on their own.

But was the question about barrels themselves and not the gunsmithing?
That is, a properly installed Bartlein (or whatever) vs. a properly installed factory barrel.
But if it was properly installed, why would it have a bad crown? Travis

The trigger has no effect on the ability of hte gun.
It does have an effect on the ability of the shooter though.
I've rarely seen a sub par barrel give top of the line performance, but i'm picky...
Obviously bedding has to be right.
But beyond that the reciever/barrel combo, and it is a single thing in reality, all have to be right.

Bedding, crown, barrel, trigger, truing.
Frankly, I think "barrel" should encompass the crown and chamber, but I wasn't involved in the initial conversation.
Travis Bringing the right ammunition would be at the top of your list.... Unless you didn't learn your lesson last year...

The nut behind the trigger matters too. The nut behind the butt is always number one on the list... Just sayin..... Let's just say, we don't want to shoot like Troy. Someone else dialed the rifle in and shot the group near the center bull..

The nut behind the trigger matters too. Yup and is the biggest factor.

I would take GOOD TRIGGER out of the equation completely. The other 4 factors are things that contribute to mechanical accuracy, which is different in how well someone can shoot a particular rifle.
The trigger comes in with how well an individual can shoot a particular rifle but has really nothing to do with mechanical accuracy.
Point being, I don't care how good the trigger is if the bedding is [bleep], the crown is at a 45 degree angle, etc etc.

The nut behind the trigger matters too. Yup and is the biggest factor. That has nothing to do with building an accurate rifle either. Like folks that say 'A 6 inch revolver is more accurate than a 2 inch revolver' Barrel length has nothing to do with it, all they are commenting on is that they can shoot a longer barrel better. It doesn't mean that one is inherently more accurate than the other.

Barrel, trigger, crown, action, bedding. this......all the " trick moves " you can think of combined won't mean a damn thing if your barrel sucks

All of the above can go out the window without good ammo. That's kinda what I was thinking.

I had an interesting conversation with a guy today. He asked me what I considered the most important factors in accuracy of a rifle. Forget the scope, mounts, ammo....just the most important baselines for developing a truly accurate rifle.
He gave my five choices:
Quality of Barrel Good Trigger Perfect Crown Stress Free Bedding Trued Action

He wanted me to list them 1. through 5. He and I debated for a while and I enjoyed the talk. We both had valid points for our choices.
In order of most important to least important, mine were; 1. Stress Free Bedding 2. Good Trigger 3. Perfect Crown 4. Trued Action 5. Quality of Barrel
How would you rate them 1 - 5?
Exactly the opposite of you. I've seen/shot rifles with piss poor bedding with obvious action/barrel stress shoot great. I've also shot fantastic groups with rifles that had absolutely atrocious triggers. They can be overcome.

I agree. It Might not have looked like a nice bedding job but doubt it was in obvious stress.

I agree. It Might not have looked like a nice bedding job but doubt it was in obvious stress. You fuggin know it all rifle/bedding experts are funny as hell. Never saw a rifle with upward barrel pressure at the forend tip shoot good ? You don't think the action can be tightened down into the stock of such a rifle without putting stress on it do you ?
