I bought my son a beautiful custom Commerical FN Mauser for his 12th birthday a couple of years ago. It came with a somewhat vintage 4x40 Mauser Scope mounted (Imported by Interarms). The clearance between the bolt and the scope is minuscule. This weekend I decided to mount a 3-9X Bushnell scope on the gun, but there is no way the bolt will clear the bell on the scope. Even raising the scope likely won't solve the problem unless I raise it a lot to clear the ball on the end of the bolt.

Has anyone else run into this issue and has a suggestion for a very narrow bell variable power scope or a different way to mount a standard variable scope? Was thinking about looking at a Leupold 2-7x33.

The Talley L/W's work pretty good on the FN's.

I'm not sure what to tell you as I have three commercial FN and three Husqvarna 1640 based rifles and I have not had that issue. All scopes are fairly compact including 4X and 6X Leupold and Weaver. They have low ring set ups with two piece including Leupold, Redfield, Weaver and Talley mounts. There's not much room but the oculars will clear on all of them. Is your bolt the factory commercial FN shaped handle? Hope you sort it out. Bruce

First thing I would do is measure the ocular of the bushnell and compare that with the old scope. Then you can start looking for scopes with an ocular measurement like the old scope, assuming you were happy with where it sat on the rifle.

That makes too much sense, Pat! : ) I just measured a couple of my FNs. One has 4X ElPaso Weaver with two piece standard Leupold lows…ocular is about 1.470"
The other has 6X Leupold in steel Talley lows…that one goes about 1.6". That one clears by .155"

Sounds like you may not have a true commercial FN as I have had zero issues mounting a scope very low on mine.

I'll take some pics of the action with the old scope mounted and get them posted tomorrow.

Will be interessting to see, as I have a Husqvarna 640 comming, and I was hoping to mount a scope using S&K lowmounts. The occular is 1.7", so it might not fit... hmmmm

Is that scope as fat at the ends as a Leupold3-9, you thnk?

That' a nice rifle. Mausers can be high tech too!

I tried to mount a VX-II 2-7x33mm on a LR98 Mauser in vertical talley rings and there wasn't sufficient tube to do the job. Would have needed extended rings of some kind.

An FX2 6x36mm did the job beautifully w/ room to spare.

I am wondering if it is really a commercial action? It sounds like a military with the short, fat bolt handle. I know they are tough to find clearance, although I have a Parker-Hale that is very close to my scope. Kind of surprised me. I think it is because the handle is pretty short compared to most American rifles.

I think, therefore I am, conservative.

I tried several different mounts and rings on my 98 including the Leupold 4x33,Leupold 2-7 and 3x9 none would work with the scope mounts and spacing.
Plus I have a rear sight on the rifle(with a folding leaf) that I did not want to remove(just something else to lose ! )
I found an old set of Ironsighter rings in my official rings and bases bag(big ziplock bag)

Dont know what height they are though.

#45 and #46 is what you need I think.
Just type in Mauser

I also used weaver bases for a mauser 98

The scope I found that works great for the ring spacing and eye relief is a Leupold M8 4x28 LONG TUBE

AS low as it can get but still clear bolt knob on my rifle.

My FN 98 Bannered rifle from the fifties wears a 2 1/2-8 Leupold in vertical split Warne QD rings. There is plenty of room.

Your double set triggers infers a guild gun. It may be a 98K, a little shorter.

On the front it's about the same size, on the back back the Zeiss has a larger ocular.
