My problem is I like the "work" I do. I get to travel, be outdoors, work with smart people, including my son, and live in one of the best places for outdoor pursuits. I can't really figure out how to improve on that by "retiring". I guess I'll retire when I can't pull my weight anymore.
Realistically, I'll cut back on work seasonally, and spend a lot of time wherever the grand kids end up. Someone has to show them how to develop an accurate load for a rifle.....
Real retirement, I suppose will be the six feet under proposition for me, as well.

Likely just stay here in SE Alberta. Good hunting, fishing is decent with world class stuff within 3 hrs. Kids are around here, involved in church. Fairly quiet, cheap, by Alberta standards, town.
Would like to retire in SW Alberta (Crowsnest Pass) but it is the 3hr part of above reason to stay put.

I left the place I was born and raised 20 years ago. I just retired this past June 1 and have elected to have a place in the Texas Hill Country and the northern Idaho Panhandle where I am wrapping up summer to head south coming Tuesday. We are more than pleased with our choices .

Northwest N.C. Most likely Ashe, Watauga, or a Wilkes County. I currently have a foothold in Wilkes that will work just fine.

Costa Rica is my thought exactly but likely impossible without divorce coming up in the conversation. More likely destination is Asheville, NC. Lockhart, I'm curious. Why Asheville?

I agree on the curiosity here. I spend a lot of time in western N.C. and would recommend several communities over Asheville. Although, you don't have to get very far out of Asheville to find some very nice areas.

Northern Minnesota in summers and AZ in the winter. Both are truly magical.
Lots of nice places out there though. Tough to beat the west, period. Tough to beat Northern MN lake country for summer to late fall. Yet, Pac NW summers are warm, dry, no bugs, and lots of hiking, fishing options. Dec-April: high country of the SW US. 2nd choice would be Mexican Yucatan Gulf or Baja.

Right where I live now, in the house I live in now. I might move for a number of years down south when the girls get holder, but I'll never sell out of this place.

and a good spot it is. want to move farther south but still be in AK, and I'm hoping that we can pull it off to snowbird some. should have rental income in two different states, so it will be a write off to go and check on property. the property in the lower 48 plan on having a 5th wheel and seeing some more of this beautiful place called the USA and hopin to drop in on some of you jabronis you been warned!

Here, or someplace exactly like it. I have never seen anywhere else like your place, Paul. Not sure it exists. Ed

one can always retire, one just has to be happy with the choices in front of them. I have clients that are very happy, do what they want to do. they have expectations inline with what they have. They are not spending part of the year in europe. you also have to be in an area that is condusive to retirement i.e. not high tax, high cost of living. They are out there. It ain't rocket science ....

These long winters are starting to take their toll. I'll probably move south somewhere. I'd like to have cool weather in the fall, and a little snow for deer hunting and Christmas. We are just beginning to discuss our retirement plans. 'Gonna be a tough sell to get Momma to move away from our church and friends up here.

Somewhere with fresh seafood and produce year round, good fishing and hunting year round, maybe a little snow every 3 or 4 years, good local economy, and very few, if any democrats.

We pretty much know (about 8 years out) but I do know where it is will involve me listening to am radio early in the morning on my way to go fishing or hunting and hearing a traffic report from Baltimore/DC via ionospheric skip and thinking "you poor bastards I'm glad I'm not there anymore"

Washington coast in the summer and Tucson in the Winter. Book it! there are a couple of couples i know that have places at lake roosevelt, north of tucson for the winter. Summer they pull the trailers up to washington for fishing/crabbing/etc. Been doing it for quite a few years.

Right where I'm at. I'm 20 minutes from the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest river drainage swamp in the US- good hunting and fishing. 30 minutes from Vermilion Bay and on to the Gulf of Mexico. At least 5 good golf courses within 25 miles from my house. Plenty of great food all over the place. Summers get hot and humid, but not as hot as some places I've been (never got to 100F this summer. Not to cold - rarely gets below freezing. Cons are lots of rain at times, and possibility of hurricanes.
