I don't think Trump started his run to become POTUS with any sincere desire to do so. I personally believe that he wanted to disrupt the status quo of insiders in Washington and bring to light what the "silent majority" truly believes and he has done so amazingly well.
With that said it would not surprise me at all if Trump continues to rip into everyone else in the race with the exception of Ben Carson and then at the appropriate time laterals the ball to Dr. Carson to run with it and then urges Trump followers to do the same.

Betting on Cruz instead of Carson. Would not bother me a bit with either
Trump is a publicity whore and never shares it wilingly, much less "hands off".
He'll ride this as long as he can. Should he win, he'll surround himself with the people "he" can find and figure it out from there. He won't be an apologist.
"The Democrat Party looks like Titanic survivors. Partying and celebrating one moment, and huddled in lifeboats freezing the next". Hatari 2017
"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

He will do the things he says so he can win a second term.
He will not bash those that conservatives like. He will bash the fugk out of those that conservatives do not like.
So Carson and Cruz are likely no-go zones for his campaign. This is not because he likes them, it is because it will increase his chance of winning. i.e. Their supporters will become his supporters if/when they don't get the nomination and he does.
