Does anyone here have any experience with these bullets on game? The Berger VLDs are supposed to work pretty well for deer, etc. and these bullets seem to be constructed similarly. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has tried them for big game and if so, what the results were.

Thanks

i just bought a box of 168 gr. .308's today. don't know if they come in any other shapes or sizes....
but how well do they shoot ?
i plan on trying them out in an fn pbr-xp.

if they shoot well, they may get sent down range at some sort of critter or another.

coyote, or praire rat for starters....

The 308s come in 155 and 168. I've only tried the 168s. They shoot fine out of my rifles, but I've never used any on game.

With so many other bullets better suited for hunting, why?

Your conclusion precedes any evidence? Pretty tough to learn that way.

I suppose a lot of people would say the Berger VLD is unsuited for hunting, but supposedly they kill deer pretty well. That fact, the fact I can currently get Nosler C.C. cheaper than any other decent bullet, at 1/4 the price of bullets I generally use for hunting, and have 1,000 of them sitting the table in frot of me makes the question worth asking. Some of the most interesting things I've learned in life were the times I've tried things that "wouldn't work".

Anyway, I really don't want this thread to turn into a series of lectures on what should or shouldn't be done. I'd just like to know what has or hasn't been done, and if it has, what the results were.

I've used literally thousands of 155 & 168 grain Noslers for competition and practice. I don't believe I ever tried the Noslers though. They can be very accurate. Dunno 'bout results on target with them though.

I did try the Berger VLD this year on coyotes and mule deer and am very impressed with the results.

The 155's were incredibly accurate in a big ol' DPMS .308 I used to have...

Thegman, if you can, shoot 'em into water jugs and wet newsprint and the like and take some photo's of the result! That'd be a start anyway.

Agreed on the cost thing- they are amazingly cheap. Hard not to like a cheap, very very accurate bullet.

It is my understanding that Nosler use the J-4 jacket as does Berger

There may be similarities in the type and thickness of the jacket, but the ogive shapes are quite different. I suspect the sharper ogive of the VLD and its non-tangential transition into the shank are what give it the ability to penetrate several inches before dramatically expanding.

Just thinking out loud ...

I'll be out of state hunting whitetail for the Thanksgiving weekend. I loaded a few of the 155s to take with me. If I get the right shot at the right deer, I'll give them a try. It won't be able to tell me if they're great, but it might be enough to tell me they're not.

What are using? 308? 30-06?

I bought a few of these to try in my .260 as they were cheap and had a decent BC. I bought the 123 gr as they had great BC. Others poo'ed my idea to hunt with them but I can't imagine them not working for lung shots.

Interested in this also, particularly the 6mm 105's.
