Stanimal, H4350 works great in the 270. I ran 130's over a book load for 3,080 fps from a 22" bbl., breathing easy and very accurate.

As an extention of Penguins first post, I recently went to Colo. on an elk hunt with my Son and Son-in-law. When an old friend at work heard about two of us taking 270s, he threw a fit. Brought in his 300 Win. Mag. just before I left and insisted I take it and use it. He had only shot it 3 times since he'd had it cause it kicked so bad, his boy had kept it for the last two years and had never shot it, lost the ammo, but by God that 270 with 150 partitions just wouldn't do! We didn't get a shot and came home early because of that big storm up high, but I have no doubt the 270 would of done the job if called upon.

Well I had to be different. Although I love my good old '06 (and will still keep the #1A in that caliber) and I am sure a good .270 would do all I need ...

I have decided to go .280 AI in a 23" tube. Haven't played with a .280 or an AI of any flavor and I guess it's time to play that game. Should be fun (although not much different in real world results from the other rounds we've been discussing). Just an itch I had to scratch I suppose. Thanks for all the feedback and info.

Thanks Mark - back from the elk hunt already or haven't you left yet?

That .280AI ought to be a fine, even superb item and I'm hoping you'll report what progress you're making.

It's kind of a funny and interesting thing, this choice of cartridges... (not implying any criticism of yours) ... so often I've heard someone say something to the effect of, "I got the .324 Whizbang because I knew I could use 259gr bullets in the Y formation iffn I want to hunt something really, really big. Know what I mean?" And then they never use over DECADES anything heavier than a 213. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> I'm sorry, it just makes me laugh, that's all.

I expect to have the barrel and installation done around March so I will have some to report then. I'll be glad to share here and I am sure I will have more questions for the experts.

As to your other comments - I know exactly what you mean and have even been guilty of the same myself on more than one occasion (although I haven't kept anything to hunt for decades yet as I have only big game hunted for about 9 years now). Just makes the world go 'round I guess. If nothing else it leads to more money spent in the industry and I suppose that's not a bad thing. In reality I probably didn't even need to rebarrel at all and could certainly have stuck with the 30-06 but had to do the "rifle loony" thing anyway.

Now if I can just find the perfect .41 mag to shoot those "heavy bullets" that I like so much in that caliber ...

Brad,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been out of town for a few days. My record with the .270 on Elk is a grand total of one, but it kinda doesn't count.

I was using a 130 grain Speer Grand Slam and was presented with a shot from about 80 yards away. Since I had bought a new freezer in anticipation of the hunt, I was greedy for meat. So, I say it doesn't count because I went for the neck shot, and the elk dropped like a sack of 'taters. No spoiled meet...The tissue in the neck looked like jello. Good exit wound, no bullet recovered.

With that shot, a .223 would have probably done the trick, so I can't say that was much of a .270 vs. Elk test.

Stanimal,

To my defense, you werent specific that you were looking for an enabler to feed your addiction. Now that I know the game, let me take another stab:

The .270 is without a doubt, the deadliest cartridge ever created! It will achieve such velocities that you can actually see contrails coming off the bullets, yet youll never wear out a barrel throat. The trajectory is so flat, it causes particle lasers to shop for Viagra.

High speed photography has proven that animals actually die 10 feet before the bullet strikes from the preceding shock wave from the bullet. Bullet impact is just a necessary by product.

Recoil is non existent and any girl worthy of selling Girl Scout Cookies is more than man enough to handle this pussycat.

But the biggest secret to the .270 Winchester, is the built in large game aphrodisiac. Just pick a nice comfy spot in the woods to pitch your La-Z-Boy and B&C record bucks will stroll up, turn broadside and wait for your shot, knowing that they are being killed by the absolute best.

So, howd I do? Ready to buy yet?

TexasRick,

Did you read this? You'll notice nowhere did Kevin say it would kill an east Texas whitetail.

My God Man ...YOU'VE BEEN RIGHT ALL ALONG!!!

Thanks for this enjoyable post, stanimal. I was tempted early on to suggest that if, in your younger years, you ever really contemplated asking that unforgettable stunning lady in red for a dance or two, but was afraid to ask and didn't, well, now's the time to be get bold ...

Just so you guys don't sell all your guns except the .270s, I'll say I love my .270, but if I'm hunting in the Selway, for example, I'm toting my .338. There's always an excuse for more than one.

I'm sorta leaning that way myself, only the 270's ballistic twin (284 Win) is making a play for that role as well. We'll see...

I used to lie awake at night planning the perfect .284 mountain rifle. Incredibly, when I got done building it, the darn thing turned out to be a .270. Go figure.
