A lot of speculation on what is/isn't possible in a 30-cal 1/12 twist barrel. I thought I'd share this video I made recently, shooting the 215gr Berger from a 1/12 twist Rem700 308Win, at 2600 fps. I'm not a fan of 1/12, but since that what my factory barrel is, figured I'd see what's possible. The Berger 215 has a G1 BC of .696. That's not hard to like. The ammo, The rifle (SWFA 12X glass), The video, shooting at 1125 yards. Excuse the video quality, but you will get the substance of it. https://www.facebook.com/shane.pitz...3271/956418591047848/?type=3&theaterShane

Thanks Shane, pretty stable in a 1-12. Did you have to adjust BC?

I didn't need to adjust BC, I went with a JBM calc using inputs of .696 G1, 70F, 25.3 Hg, and the first shot was as you saw it on the vid.
I've also taken it to 1810 yards. JBM calc indicated 22.8 mils, and that was right on the money. I'm going to try to get a video at that distance in the not too distant future.

I forgot to add, do you think this can happen at 800ft elevation? That's where I'm at....

I don't know. I'm at 4000' in the valley, and on up.
You'd have to give it a try.

Here's a follow up video, at 1800 yards. Mirage was kind of tough. I fired a total of 8 rounds, in two separate vids, and could only see one impact through the scope, but found three on the video. I spliced the vid's together, so it is what it is (poor quality), but still worth sharing. Anyway, it's not too conclusive of a test of stability in the transonic/subsonic range, but I'll probably try it again someday when it is cloudy, and light/mirage are more favorable. http://vidmg.photobucket.com/albums...20win%20215%20Ber%201800_zps3n8dc0rt.mp4

Dayum Shane, you still have doubts about 'stability'? If so, I need to get some instability ... Shooting 180 grain VLDs in a 7WSM here. And I can't do that ... yet

Your combo would make mine look sick at 1800.
One of my shooting pards shoots the 215 Berger out of his 300 WinMag at about 3035 fps. It does amazingly well at 1800.
I seem to get a kick out of pushing the 308 as far or further than what seems possible.
One thing that really does impress me is the SWFA 12X on a 45 moa base. I'm dialed up 22.8 mils, using a center hold on the target. I still have 10.7 mils available in the erector. This is with a 100 yard zero.

A few pics, Rifle and kit, Looking downrange from the firing point to 1800 yard target, This is the target. I don't have a laser capable of 1800 yards. I used a Garmin Etrex 20 to mark a waypoint on the target, and used that info to determine range. Not the most precise, but should be within 10 yards.

The only reason I used that chambering is because it kept the Berger 180 at the minimum recommended speed for bullet performance out to 1K. That is without pushing it harder than designed. If your 215 in a .308 would kill well at 1K, in terms of bullet speed and performance, the 7 WSM would be for sale.
Not saying it won't by any means, I have no experience with that. My goal is to land one perfect cold bore killshot at 850 yards plus. I could sure get a rifle that's cheaper to shoot and easier to carry!
1800 yards? I can't shoot as good as your 1800 video at 1000 yards. Yet. I'm having a tough time with velocity spread at the moment. Pretty much a novice here.

Using a GPS because it's out of range of a rangefinder?
That is bad azzed!

I took a good look at the map. My firing point was 4600', target was 4700'.
Max ord of the bullet was about 44 feet above line of sight.

I was recently playing with the 308 at 1800 yards (215 Berger, 2600 fps). I was able to dial a dead on hold (22.8 mils) with 10 mils remaining in the erector, plus 10 mils on the reticle.
I'd guess you will have no problems with the flatter 300WinMag. 20 moa base will probably be fine, but it leaves a lot of 'down' in the erector.
Shane MM, would be so kind to share the load that you are using to achieve 2600fps with a 308 and 215 Berger. What is your barrel length. I know I will not be able to reach this but maybe squeeze 2500 out of mine. Hammer, here's my load data. Start low and work up. Moly tumbled 215 Berger Win brass CCI 200 primer RL-17, 49.0 gr OAL - 3.09" (20/thou off lands) Muzzle velocity 2600 fps from 22" Rem varmint barrel.
