I think Camouflage is worth the money if it is the CORRECT color/shade for your area, and the correct DESIGN. Most aren't, and the patterns look pretty at 10" on the store rack, but you turn into a grey/black blob quickly after 3-40 yards. Predator Camo has it right, as does ASAT and a couple others.

Most don't.

I have plenty of camo. I still wear it since its workable and I have it.

But I don't worry about it anymore since with a few exceptions, camo all turns into a block of color, solid color, when viewed from very far off. I've had MUCH better luck with differing color pants and shirt, added the break up of a pack with straps and maybe orange vest, I'm much blockier and animals pay much less attention.

Bowhunting still doesn't make much difference to me, though I will knock down the tone of the bright face and hands if I have a choice. But i've had as much success within 15 yards with and without camo on.

Needless to say we wash in scent free non brightening soap, though I have never been able to ask a deer if they can see UV light or not... and I wear what works. I don't think that cammo makes much of a difference if you are hunting correctly.

What still amazes me is the feel of the need of camo, yet game is fairly hard to see normally, and their hides are far from camo, unless talking bobcats and the like. Much harder for me to see than the common way to dark camo patterns that turn you into a dark blob.

YMMV and this is, IMHO
Jeff

Rost, I agree with alot of your post, most of it. But GOOD camo, like Predator, does not make you into a blob from a distance.

The fact of the matter is that deer and elk are colorblind, but they detect blues very well. You are better off in blaze orange that has been washed in a detergent that doesnt have brighteners than you are in new camo or camo that has been washed in detergent that does include brighteners. The :brighteners enhance the UV reflectivity of the material. Manufacturers add UV brighteners to new clothing because it catches your eye better just like it does for game, but not to the same degree.

I once saw a photo that was taken with a special UV sensitive film. In the woods were two guys, one in camo and one in regular clothing. The regular clothing had been washed to suppress he brighteners, the camo had not. You could barely pick you the guy in the regular clothing but the guy in camo stood out like a neon light.

True enough about the UV brighteners. Here's where the confusion comes in. Some of the more recent books on deer hunting show studies that deer are NOT totally colorblind.

I don't know, but If I can wear camo, I'm going to. Take every edge. I wash all my stuff in Sport Wash, with no UV brighteners. I still believe scent, sound (noisy clothes) and movement give you away most times.

Mauser, somewhere, maybe not this thread, I"ve said that Predator, ASAT, and maybe a few others I can't think off right now are pretty good at breaking up form.

What I still scratch my head at, is the new Marine pattern. That thing may be good up close but any Marine past 100 yards is a horrible blob. At least to my eyes.

Now lets talk, animals eyes may be formed differently than ours, but exactly how do we know what they see or dont' see. Testing against the animal is subjective but maybe the best. I certainly don't buy rods and cones and numbers etc... as there are also other issues like depth of field to consider also.

All I know is like I've said, camo doesn't make that much difference IMHO. What I've done with camo on can usuallybe done without it. And I've not had bad luck without camo either. IE never been seen without camo unless I'm breaking one of the rules.

That being said, I still shower with scent free soap, I still put on camo if its the right temp clothing for the situation, mostly because I have it etc....

Most of the time I'm gonna make sure I'm broken up no matter what I wear. A lot of times I wear my work jeans and white/blue striped city shirt to the pasture after work. Only time I've been snagged is getting caught in the open, camo would not have made a difference there. I've even just stood in those clothes leaning on the side of the old barn in the pasture and in plain sight, but not silhouetted, and always considering the wind and have had the deer within 50 yards easy.

I try to hedge my bets, but can win without...

Jeff

While sitting around this afternoon I thought I should shoot this picture... I have not figured out if I can put in UV type effect with the photo editor. [img][image]http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m70/supercrewd/Hunting%20and%20fishing/colorvsbnw.jpg[/img][/image]

rost495,

I've not seen the latest USMC cammo pattern, but remember that some modern military patterns are also design to defeat observation devices such as night sights...I think the US had one called "Night Desert Cam" which had almost a grid like black pattern over it designed to defeat II scopes...

I went on an elk hunting trip in the Selway Bitteroot Wilderness last year and my guide, who makes his living finding elk and does it really, really well, wore a red plaid wool jacket. And blaze orange is not required there. Tells me all I need to know about this subject.

I agree with McInnis

I have tried all camo and sent blocker etc. and have not seen any reward for my efforts.

Best weapon cover and working with the wind.

I wore my grey pants and blue flannel coat when I got 3 of my bulls.

I tend to disagree with those who say it helps a lot. In the many years that I have hunted whitetail I have had numerous occasions to be within sometimes 10 yards of deer when I have been clothed in full Blaze Orange. If I knew the deer was there and I stopped all movement and the wind was correct no deer ever determined I was there. Only after some sort of movement by me or a wind shift did any of those deer get concerned real quick and leave the area.

All of these events happened in moderate woods conditions. I can't say what would happen out in the open though.
