"Washington (CNN)A number of cruise missiles launched from a Russian ship and aimed at targets in Syria have crashed in Iran, two U.S. officials told CNN Thursday.

Monitoring by U.S. military and intelligence assets has concluded that at least four missiles crashed as they flew over Iran.

The U.S. believes, based on intelligence reports of damage assessments, that some buildings were damaged and civilians may have been hurt.

It's unclear where in Iran the missiles landed. The Russian ships have been positioned in the south Caspian Sea, meaning the likely flight path for missiles into Syria would cross over both Iran and Iraq.

The Russians have been firing a relatively new cruise missile called "Kaliber," using it for the first time in combat."

It would of been cheaper for them to hit these targets from the air, but they wanted to try out the new missiles and the new launch platforms as well. They probably want a "combat proven" system to assist in the international sales of the export version of this system. The ruskies knew 4 missiles crashed short, but reported all hit perhaps for this reason. Of course we were watching, and reported the shorts to embarrass them. and perhaps hinder their sales efforts.

So I ask you again to explain this grand conspiracy. Were the Russians in on it, or how do you explain the timing where we were able to fire out missiles from either the Med or Indian Ocean and hit northern Iran at the same time as the Russian missiles from the Caspian were passing over?

Does Russia have it's own GPS satellites? If not, I wouldn't be surprised if the GPS data was monkeyed with when they launched their missiles.

Russia does have their own GPS satellites, but these missiles are inertial, not GPS guided.

Considering how Vlad’s activities in Syria are boosting oil prices, perhaps the “accidental” cruise missile landing in Iran wasn’t such an accident? Nothing like some mid-East tension to drive oil prices up.
