I use the small leatherman-type tool that Cabela's has for $10. I have it in an old Gerber pouch with the knife and blades. I re-sharpen the blades, so only replace them when they break.

I might get one. I've been using my fingers, but sometimes my fingers are froze. I love my Havalon.

I looked at both the Havalon and Outdoor Edge and purchased the Outdoor Edge

I looked at both the Havalon and Outdoor Edge and purchased the Outdoor Edge I traded a trap for the Outdoor Edge. It is a better knife, for sure, but I also like the Havalon. It works great for skinning small critters. Neither one compares to a real knife. They shine, though, for those who don't know how/don't want to sharpen a regular knife. I compromise and carry one of each, while elk hunting!

Looks like its faster to just unfold my old Schrade Oldtimer and gut the elk while everyone else is screwing around with their blades.

I was duped into buying the outdoor edge. It looks good, until you actually use it. Pure junk. Didn't even make it through boning out a deer on a mountain top before it was dull. I get 2 deer at a minimum with a havalon blade.

I got one of those with a package of blades I just ordered. Good idea, but it's just one more thing to carry and one more thing to lose. I use my letterman too and don't seem to have an issue.
I'll give the plastic blade remover an honest try, but my hopes aren't up too high that it is anything extraordinary.

For light, a small pair of hemostats works well. I generally keep my multi-tool in my pack so use it. Fingers work too. Lots of folks like the Gerber version of the Havalon due to the ease of blade changing. I don't think I'd like the Outdoor Edge.

I have both the havalon and the outdoor edge. They each have their merits. The havalon blades are sharper and stay sharp way longer. The ease of blade change and the blade profile for skinning is way better on the outdoor edge.
On my personal hunts I carry ingrams because it makes me happy. When guiding and often doing multiple animals a day, I carry the replaceable blade knives.

It's a totally different subject but I've done MANY elk gutless. The meat always comes out tougher if it doesn't go into rigor mortis before boning.

Never understood the confusion some people have with just using your hands to change the damn blades. Perhaps it ranks as rocket science.
