Fish,

You need to ride over when I get the Pentax. We can compare it to several scopes. I'm thinking (hoping) it will make a very nice scope to put on a loaner gun like the one my son-in-law always wants to borrow when he goes hunting. I hate to send him out w/ a Mickey Coleman Custom equipped w/ a VX-III 4.5x14x50 riding aboard.

Those crazy in-laws always seem to bump every pine tree in the county w/ someone else's rig....

Still waiting on the Pentax................

Wifey ran to town today and saw a DHL tag on the back door when she got back home. Apparently DHL doesn't know how to leave a package at the back door like UPS and USPS does.....

Apparently DHL doesn't come around much as the note said they would be back on the 16th.........

Hope this isn't an omen as to the quality of the Pentax cause DHL sucks big time......

OK, I've vented. I feel better now.....Did I mention that DHL sucks???????

Did I mention that had UPS shipped it, I would have already mounted it and started testing it??

Did I mention that Deer Season starts this Saturday???

Mr. Furious - I'd like very much to see your results. I think I have spoken to you about the Meopta before. I have the Burris 6x40, Leupold M8 6x42, and the Meopta Artemis 2000 so I have an interest. I also have a Weaver K6. IMO - the Burris is a good clear scope but outclassed in low light by the others. It also has click adjustments but I have not been overly impressed with the mechanism or the fact that they are 1/2 clicks. Shouldn't really matter on a hunting rifle but they are not as crisp as some others. I don't have and FX III so adjustments on the Leupold are friction and I don't like them. Scope is great otherwise and I have a terrific #4 reticule on it from Premier that I wouldn't trade for. The Meopta is every bit the scope the Leupold is but noticeably heavier. In fact, it is a tank. It has fantastic, precise, sharp, click adjustments. Mine has range estimating capabilities but I could not see trying to use them at distances where it would be warranted, in low light on a moving animal. Still -the reticule is a #4 type. Thick but not as thick as my original one I returned because I was stupid. Interested to see how my thoughts compare to what your will show.

Cheaha-- that 2.5-8x has got to be about perfect for bama isnt it?

So far it has held up to 100 rounds of .358 Winchester without any issues. Even shot a 5 round, .749 group, @ 100 yards with the Pentax.

I originally purchased a Leupold M8 4X33 for this gun but I decided to try out the Pentax as well (The M8 is now going on a .308 Savage 99). Doug made that decision even easier with the price and return policy. The only thing I don't really like is the busy reticle. I would prefer if it was just simple crosshairs. However, for $99, it is a heck of deal and I can make do with the reticle.

Sorry, I can't give more technical details, or a more comprehensive review, but it is almost as bright and clear as the hollow cardboard tube benchmark .

Yes but a fella can't have too many guns or scopes....

Looking for the Pentax to be the scope on my loaner rig.
That is, if DHL ever delivers the da** thing......

Well, I missed DHL yesterday so didn't get the Pentax until this afternoon. Also got the Leupold today, so out of curiosity I did a quick and dirty comparison in the back yard. Here's my initial observations:

- The Leupold has a slight advantage when it comes to eye position and relief. This is one area Leupold has always seemed to excel, so the FX-III's being more forgiving wasn't much of a surprize. What was a surprize is that the Pentax was only a hair behind the Leupold in this regard (shorter eye relief).
- Both scopes have excellent clarity that extends all the way to the outter edge of the view. No fuzzy edges, no distortion of the image towards the edges, nada.
- In regard to color correctness, the Leupold offered a more accurate color hue. Being fall I was able to use the variety of different colored leaves on the ground as a comparison, and the Leupold was very close in hue to the naked eye. The Pentax seemed to diffuse the brightness a little and make things appear to have a flat appearance (dull green grass, pale red and orange leaves, etc.). The color wasn't way off by any means, but you could clearly see a difference.
- Both scopes gather more than enough light in low-light conditions to permit use at night. With nothing more than a street lamp directly across the street as a light source (mostly obscured by a pine tree) I was able to make out most anything I tried to see at 100 yards, even objects tucked away in the shadows.

Should have them mounted on rifles tomorrow and hopefully will be able to get out this weekend to so some more side-by-side comparisons.

As long as there's still lead in the air, there's still hope!

Coho,

What type of reticle does it have? Perhaps you could describe it or even post a picture of it?

Thanks,

John

It looks like the below picture but the gaps seem smaller, in person, than shown in the picture (at least it seems so to me). It isn't a big deal but I felt I should come up with at least 1 negative.
