After failing to draw a Utah elk tag with 11 points I decided to diy hunt Montana on a left over tag. I was fortunate to take this buck at 250 yards after spotting the group of deer he was with from a mile away. I was hunting public land in the Fort Peck area. I also took an antelope doe on public land in northeast Wyoming on a left over tag.

Sambo, that is a nice public land buck, especially for the general area you were in. I didn't see a buck that big all fall while gathering cows on the north side of the lake. As usual quite a few hunters.

Congrats on a nice buck! That's about as good as you can ask for on public land in the breaks these days. The breaks around Fort Peck Lake are totally overrun with hunters! There were over 70 deer killed and delivered to the processor around here opening weekend. Not one of them would score over 140", most barely over half that. Pretty sure a significant portion of Washington state is in the county right now.

That buck was probably sneakier than a lot of private land bucks twice his age.
Bucks in certain areas of the Breaks compare to Rez bucks when it comes to being wild and that is saying something....grin

Thanks jwall, that means a lot. There was a smaller 4 pt with the group he was in, other than that all I saw were dinks. This is only my 4th mule deer buck but he is my best yet.

Congrats on a dandy buck!
PS- 11pts in UT isn't all that many for lots of elk units, unfortunately...
