Two 2x6's will be stronger than a 4x6.

I put 1/2" outdoor plywood between the two 2X6s.

lam beams are cheap compared to failure too.

I don't put much faith in 2x6s anymore, they ain't what they used to be.....

But I've got some heavy loads on 4x6s that ain't what they used to be either.

Bolting the 2x6 s together will be much better than nailing.

Stress in a log is hard or impossible to overcome. It is amazing how much stress can exist in a seemingly straight log. You could mill another piece, and if it comes out satisfactory, end coat it with a wax sealer. This will help control the drying process. Also, keep the beam out of the sun while you do this. A covered area with some air flow works best. This is a pretty slow process, especially with a cant, or beam of this size.

How do you figure?

When I frame custom houses, often solid beams are called out for window headers VS doubling or tripling dimensional lumber. Engineers never let us substitute.

Really? I always thought that two boards with different grain patterns complimented each other and made for a stronger beam.

Engineers ought to know, which I'm not.

And, certainly, not all 2x6s or 4x6s are equal either. Classes and grades of lumber can be very, very different. Engineers and architects can be very specific, and for good reason. A piece of clear, straight douglas fir, for instance, is typically much sturdier material than is the same size material of common pine or spruce. There's a reason why a 99 cent 'white-wood' stud is called "economy" while a 'select' stud might run $3.49 per.

If it were laminated or oriented I would tend to agree with you but nailing two pieces of dimensional lumber together does not equate to a small laminated beam.

I'm starting to get the feeling that the 24 Hour Campfire Task Force was behind that $43,000,000.00 gas station in Afghanistan.
