G19 in 9mm. They are handguns. With good ammo, there isn't a significant difference on-target.

When I carry a caliber starting in 4 it is a Colt Commander in .45 ACP.

I guess its a question of what more do you want, concealment,or stopping power? right now, leaning towards......the 45. interested in what ya'll carrying? The last real-world compilation of one-shot stops had the .40 as the top stopper, not the 45 ACP. Even ignoring that, the 45 probably doesn't stop much better than the 40 and the 40 probably doesn't conceal much better than the 45.

I'm liking the G43. This one is truly small enough to never leave home.

Personally I like a Colt Series 70 Its real metal. Whats the real reason not to brag I shoot it very well and I gives me a great deal of confidence. Shoot what you shoot well and forget the rest.

I prefer the 45acp over 40 S&W.
That being said I carry a 40S&W for size, capacity, and weight. Hard to go wrong with either but capacity is the most important to me. Lately been thinking about going back to a 9mm?

The best caliber is the caliber of the gun that you didn't leave at home. This. The most useless handgun in the world is the one not on you.

the .40 is stupid, always has been from the beginning. 9mm or .45ACP. If you want a .40 get a 10mm.
For a daily carry gun G43, G19, PM9. If you want to tote heavier iron Kimber 45ACP of some commander length flavor or the Ruger LW a good gun for the money.

With the models and options today, there is no reason not to have both of your requirements. As others have opined - the best companion is the one you have with you.

I had a dream last night. I dreamed a group of four thugs were following a couple out the door of a restaurant and were going to rob them in the parking lot. I had my Beretta 950B Jetfire .25ACP in my pocket and decided to follow and try to stop the robbery. I pulled the little gun out of my pocket and held it behind my back as I confronted the group of thugs and told them to stop. The lead thug then pulled out a 1911 .45ACP and pointed it at me from a distance of about 20 feet. I felt so inadequate and decided not to shoot, but turned my back and started walking away, waiting for the sound of gunfire. The thug followed me and I said, are you going to shoot me in the back? He finally showed mercy and turned and ran away. I woke up and realized how under gunned I am carry a .25ACP.
