Hell that's nothing! Looks fine to me! Scope it, shoot it, hunt it. Repeat.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

with the rust, a little oil and some fine steel wool, after hunting the hell out of it, you won't remember a thing about rust/gouges, just the memories! Fine (OOOO) steel wool a little elbow grease and (dare I say) a little cold blue on the receiver and it may not even be too noticeable. The cold bluing along with a little gun oil will help keep the surface protected as well... I'd be happy as hell with that little fwt. It is in much better condition than the OP described it. As they say, "Pictures are worth a thousand words". Have a Happy Thanks giving guys!!!
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Ok it looks like the base screw was cross threaded which we drilled out and now we will see if we can clean them up with a 6-48 tap. Hope it works. Ricky

Good luck. I hope you can fix it. If not, you may have to go to the 8-40's...
