I didn't want to hijack wabigoon's thread so I decided to make a new one. I'm just curious what your top five comfort foods are? I have been fortunate enough to have been all over the globe, and have eaten some amazing things, but when I come home I always go back to my "roots".

A little background, I am from the midwest and my grandparents were Iowa farmers that raised cattle, hogs and chickens. I think it will be interesting to see the differences regionally in what people consider their "taste of home" foods. Here are mine.

1. Beef roast with mashed potatoes and gravy

2. Beef tips and homemade egg noodles with mashed potatoes and gravy

3. Side pork sandwiches. I will take fresh side pork over bacon every time! Toss it in seasoned flour, fry it.....heaven.

4. Chicken and homemade noodles with mashed potatoes and gravy.

5. Corned beef and cabbage. Not our heritage, but my mom and grandmother made it several times a year. To this day it's one of my favorite meals.

I could go on, but it was just the top five.

Being from the south,

Chicken and dumplins

Fried chicken

Fresh vegetables from the garden.

Cracklin cornbread

And of course, iced sweet tea.

1. Pizza[not just any ol' pizza, the real kind, which I eat about once a week].
2. Pizza[see above]
3. Toss up between pizza and baby-back ribs
4. A correctly cooked N.Y. Strip
5. Bacon & egg biscuit

Scallops could fall in anywhere from 2-5[as long as I've had my pizza fix].

Sausage and kraut, the former sourced from an undisclosed location somewhere within the state of ohio (stadium mustard, prepared horseradish)

1. Fish and chips with malt vinegar (fresh made, NOT FROZEN EVER!).

2. Chicken and dumplings.

3. Fried side pork sandwiches served on fresh crusty bread.

4. "Southern" fried chicken because anything from the north of anywhere is not fried chicken, and that is a Canadian saying that ! (dark meat), served with red beans and rice.

5. Ham and scalloped potatoes.

I bet there is not a thing you cook that I would not come to think of as comfort food. Food made with patience and love is always the path to comfort and a smile.

The first thing that comes to mind is Cajun style chicken and andouille gumbo. Not the SE Louisiana Creole style which has tomato and okra.

Fun foods are synonymous with comfort foods in my book. The list is long but here's the top five breakdown.

1) Meatloaf & smashed taters with a thick brown onion gravy

2) chicken & dumplings (thick chewy rolled dough)

3) my wife's squash and nut medley.

4) Basically any fried chicken. Especially southern chikken shack style sandwiches which are a whole pan or deep fried breast served between two slices of plain white bread.

5) Coney Island Hot Dogs with onions and sauce. When I was heavy into M/C drag racing a stop for Coney Dogs in Johnstown, Pa. on the way to Norwalk, Oh. was mandatory which meant driving roughly 110 miles out of the way. A little out of the way but the pit crew loved 'em.

Lasagna is near the top of the list.

Grits and fried eggs.

Meatloaf.

Oh yeah!

That might un-seat lasagna for the top spot.

They're cousins, but IME there is a difference. With a dark brown onion gravy and potatoes either one is fine by me.
