Is it true that Remington is discontuning the UltraMag lineup? Local gunshop said they heard that but wasn't sure if it's true or not? Most places I checked online nobody really has any ammo in stock for it. I thought the 300RUM was pretty popular.

I think the .300 is too popular to axe. The others are dead in the water though.

With the exception on the 300, they have discontinued them I believe.

I agree with Calvin...the .338 was my favorite. The Lapua stole its thunder though and I fear its a goner. The 7 as well...and the 28 Nosler isn't going to help things. The 300 is by far the most popular but honestly how many .30 cal fire breathers does the world need?

I think its very hard for any cartridge to un-seat already popular offerings. Exception being if the Military adopts...IE 308 Winchester, 338 Lapua. The 7 Rem, 338 and 300 Win are very popular. I never thought RUM's would eat into their market in a significant way.

Can't believe the 30 Nosler will fare very well either.

As far as I know, the only Ultra Magnum that has been dropped is the 375 Ultra Magnum, the 7mm Ultra Magnum isn't highly popular, however the .300 and .338 Ultra Magnum are. The .338 Ultra Magnum is the one that is usually "Sold Out" at my gun store.

The UltraMags were dead on arrival. They've been on life support for quite a while. Only a small market need almost 100 grs. of powder to get the job done.

I took in a 7mm UM on a trade that looked new and unfired. Like to have never gotten rid of it but I dont see many if any of them used in the south. For $60 a box for ammo and hardly any available even online I can see why.

I doubt seriously that any of the Nosler cartridges will ever be widly successful. But the trend will continue...new cartridges that do nothing special...a way to sell more gas, brass etc. Remember the 30 TC lol.

It's nothing new...look at the redundancy in the 8x57 family, the 06 family, and my personal favorite the 308 family. The all pretty much do the same thing...

Checked inventory of a fairly large distributor for in stock Remington Rifles in the following chamberings.

1 7MM UM
30-35 .338 UM
150 .300 UM

Looks like as stated by others the 7 is dead, moderate interest in the 338 and the 300 is doing well.

Bought a 700 BDL SS in 300 RUM in '03. Put a 3.5-10x40 Leo in DD rings and thought I was going to kill elk and deer farther away than ever before.blush

Then wondered why I couldn't get decent groups off the bench. eek

I never took it out hunting because I wasn't confident that I could shoot it as effectively as my non-magnums.

Sold it a couple years back. The RUMs might have their place but it is not in my safe.

Biggest, baddest, fastest, kickingest is great for the marketing department.

For the average "hunter" who shoots a box of shells a year, the RUMS were too much of a good thing! Sales were great for the first few years, then everyone sobered up and realized they didn't need that much power.

I've had 3 338 RUMs but don't have any now. If I was going to built another, given the current state of brass production, I would go with the 340 Bee.

I just want the action to build an Edge on. Completely agree, it's a pretty nutty cartridge for a regular old hunting rifle. Have a buddy who bought an XCR in 338 RUM; he's an absolute rifle LOON and has owned scores and scores of rifles, and it was very accurate, but he found it unshootable from hunting positions. Would get tagged by the scope.

I'm gonna build heavy. Your point on brass is duly noted.
