Here's another Karnis creation. He did an awesome job rescuing this HS precision stock. It was in BAD shape when he got it but it looks fantastic now!

Thanks Carlos!

Glad this got bumped, but I did find it on a search first...

Gonna do some stock painting soon.

I've a Joann Fabric and Craft store not too far away, we'll see if they carry the web paint the next time I'm out there.

Good info here.........

Question on retexturing a Kevlar Moutain.

It appears to be the same texture as Karnis' Marine Tex/sponge finish...but is worn a little from a LOT of handling.

Would it make sense to sand off the old original texure to a certain degree and retexture...or try to "patch up" what's there already?

Not building anything but a working gun but wouldn't mind a "new" rig to brag up before I beat the crap out of it myself.

My gut tells me, for a nice even rub, to "wear out" the whole thing with sand paper and start over with a new texture that's all the same......

I'd re-texture, easy to do. You don't necessarily have to "sand" it flat. You can get 40-50% "flat" re-texture and repaint. Also might be a good time to do a palm swell shocked .

Got the Marine Tex and gotta say I've been a dumbass for not trying it before this.

First action bed went off without a hitch last night and can see how well Marine Tex is going to work for the repairs on the rest of the stock...

Had a little left over so I grabbed a TSX box sponge and a chunk of smooth polyurethaned wood to try out your texturing tips...

It's gonna work fine and the texture produced is SWEET.

I figured out though that you have to put it on thin and then pull the sponge straight up off the stock...and any smearing action frigs it up.

Thanks Karnis...good advice.

I'm going to try my hand on a takeoff Rem syn MR stock that is factory black. I've got the Krylon Fusion camo flat green and the black webbing and then plan to top it with Krylon matte clear coat (if I need to).. Hard for me to decipher whether the fusion will stick to the factory stock without doing the Marine Tex thing. For a first timer is there anything else I need to know?

Fusion is designed to stick.

WW: glad it worked out for you. Easy to use and it is very good for fixing dings, gouges, etc. on synthetics. Hard as brick bat as well.

Kimber7man:

Make sure to degrease the stock. I've used the stuff made by Birchwood Casey to clean metal (synthetic stock version), alcohol, etc. All that after "scratching" it down. From then on I handle with surgical gloves so no oil from ma feengers gets on the plastic. Hang the stock at about eye level or a bit lower and start spraying. Don't spray it on real thick or it will run, just start covering and work your way around the stock. Follow the directions on the can as far as reapplying product.

Oh yeah, remove the sling swivels and the recoil pad if possible. If not at least mask off the pad.
