I'm trading for a CZ 527 .22 Hornet and am researching low scope mounts, such as fixed Talley. I don't yet have the gun and have never handled one.

Seems the factory bolt handle presents a problem clearing the scope ocular with low rings. One vendor offers an exchange bolt handle with modifications, another an aftermarket SS bolt handle.

CZ offers a replacement bolt handle for $35, a good bit cheaper than the above options. Looks good in the photo.

Anyone with experience scoping a 527?

I've ground clearance into a bunch of them to help with lower scope mounting. The root of the handle is way thicker than it needs to be and keeps scopes mounted up in the stratosphere if left unmodified. I've also cut them off, took a bunch of meat out of the root area and TIG welded a new handle on. Something definitely needs to be done if you don't want your scope setup for giraffe use.

I think the new 527 American M1 handle solves a bunch of that. I can order one from CZ; swap out looks easy. The new handle seems to have a lot less material at the root and may have slightly less curve, could be a tad longer.

Medium Warne rings seem to the be lowest at around .400+". Burris med and Leupold med are .5".

The gun is a trade and original rings aren't included. Those CZ rings are ugly, anyway.

DF, I've been where you are. The M1 handle is the easiest way to go, and its easy to install.

Warnes are the lowest but they are HEAVY if that matters to you.

What's cheek weld like with .5" rings and the American stock?

Honestly, not ideal but the Warnes don't give all that much better cheek weld. Either bring my head higher off the stock than I like. It's one of the CZ's flaws IMO but otherwise they are great. relatively light, nicely finished and accurate.

Wonderful little rifle I wonder why they would leave such a design flaw...

I talked to a tech at Brownells. They measured the Talley 16mm CZ 527 rings at .450". Talley says they're .525". I would tend to believe Talley, but will order a set and measure them for myself.

I'm going to order the $35 American M1 bolt handle from CZ. From what I've learned, it's more ergonomic regarding the handle knob being too close to the scope ocular. The bolt handle root is much thinner, giving better clearance for scope lens covers, etc.

FWIW, I have a set of Warnes on my 455 and the bolt clears the scope (a Weaver Classic V-24, 8-24x42) just fine.

When I get it all put together, I'll post photos.

Have an even half dozen 527 rifle from '03 models on up. The whole bolt handle thing is long since dead. Period. Forget about it.

Also, take a good look at Warne rings. Their medium is about like most lows I have seen and my "X40" scopes clear the barrel by 1/4" or so.

Tagging this thread. Need some help with my 527 LH. I'll be interested to see photos, DF.

I did mine myself with a Dremel tool and hand polishing, followed by cold Oxpho-Blue. Came out nicely, and blended well with the factory blue.

Got the new CZ American M1 527 bolt handle. Easy swap out.

I like it, gives better clearance for scopes with lens covers. Good value for $35.

I got a set of Talley rings, but sent them back. Brownells showed them at .3+" height, but they were closer to .5".

The 527 receiver flats have slight ridges, each side. The Talley's couldn't seat fully. I could have used the Dremel to remove material from the bottom of the rings to clear these ridges. Otherwise, there is a gap between base and receiver flat and the rings won't come together enough to grip the scope.

Of course, I could cut those ridges flat with the top of the base, but that wouldn't be Kosher on a Prestige grade 527.

Sent the Talley's back in exchange for Med. Warnes. They're not as pretty as Talley, but with the new bolt handle, will probably be the lowest possible scope mount. I'll cut them to fit those ridges if necessary.

I adjusted the CZ trigger, eliminating the set feature, polishing sear contacts, installing a lighter spring, setting the sear engagement, over travel and weight. It's now a 2 3/4 pound trigger as good as a Timney. No creep, breaks clean with no perceivable over travel. Aftermarket trigger not needed here...

Edited to add, yes, this is the new CZ M1 American bolt handle they sell for $35. Easy to retrofit the older guns and much less expensive than other options, including a swap out with certain vendors.

Good for CZ for stepping up to the plate with a reasonably priced functional bolt handle. Not many manufacturers will do that, so shooters have to rely on aftermarket parts or modifications to do the job.

And, it's a well made, nicely blued part for $35. They not getting rich off that part, for sure.

I was concerned the replacement part may not be blued as nicely as the 527 Prestige. It's not quite as shiny but looks OK. One would never know the difference without comparing the two handles side by side.

Contour and length of the new part is the same as the OEM part. The base is thinner, that's the only difference. But it'll clear about any scope, even with lens covers, and without high rings.
