Sam,

Last I recall talking with Pat, he recommended the 105 scenar if my barrel could fling them. He's actually guided me to a load with the 105 hybrid, IIRC that's what he's using for yotes with his 6 Creedmoors. Scenars go with the 6.5's and 308's....

Not saying the 90 Scenar won't work, I just don't see the point of chancing it.

I get where you're coming from on this. IMO, the ballistic tip bullets are about the best a guy can do for most game shooting.
Hard to find a better balance of accuracy, penetration, and overall performance. Granted, they're not the cheapest bullets out there, but not bad in comparison to the bondeds, the monos, and the partitions.

You find a good load using the 95BT and I'd guess that your .270 will see a lot less use...

DF, I agree, too many other proven options.

JB, interesting, I guess you just never know exactly what to expect!

Ballistics aside, pretty sure I would have noticed a coreless bullet when seating.

Marty, Pat would certainly know what works. The 243 Montana is only a 10 twist so stabilization would probably be an issue.
The 90 Scenar is the first and only version I've tried so far. Years ago Pat gave me some 308/155's to try in my 300 WSM's but I'm still using up a bunch of 175 SMK's and haven't loaded them yet. Guessing out loud but they'd probably do better on game in a standard 308.

John, I bought a 270 Montana last year and haven't even shot at anything with it yet. Need to find a decent mule deer or two and then maybe go back to the 243!

Here's a crude cross section on a 95 BT and a 90 Scenar. I didn't quite get the bullets filed exactly down the middle but it still gives a decent idea.

(Bullet on left is a 140 AB I recovered from a whitetail this past fall. Buck was quartering away hard and I missed the mark by a couple inches hitting him in the hind quarter. Dropped him and I was able to get in a quick follow up shot. Human error is why I still prefer to be 'over-gunned', of course I also wouldn't have tried the shot in the first place with the 90 Scenar so it is somewhat of a mute point.)

Sam

Have you tried any of the Berger 95gr vld hunting? They were a hammer in my last 243.

805, negative, just the Scenars and 95 BT's. Shot a few 95 Partitions just to see how close they'd match the Scenars but they were off by 6-8" at 400 yards.

Sam,

Come to think of it, both of my bucks where the bullet left the jacket at the entrance hole were less than 30 miles from where you live. Maybe it's something in the water!

Back when we were using the 243 a fair bit, in a M77 RSI, the lowly 90 gr Speer always worked.

I've been swapping back and forth between the 85gr TSX and the 87 gr V-max in my current 243. Both bullets hit close enough to the same POI that I don't worry about sighting in when I switch between the two. I've heard so many good things about the 95 gr nosler ballistic tips that I really should try them. The only thing stopping me is I bought what amounts to about two lifetime supplies of each of my current bullets. Guess I better shoot more!😃
