This subject has been covered but 1) I'm too lazy to go look up multiple posts from undetermined time frames and 2) that never stopped anyone from discussing the subject again, so...
Having never owned an AR since I turned in the one Uncle Sam let me use (I don't own a cell phone either, go figure) what are the good shooter grade AR platforms these days?
Do NOT want the most tricked out, 1/2" accurate, super duper evolution of the design, just a reliable bullet hose that can keep MOBG (minute of bad guy) out to some reasonable range like 200-300 yards. I fully understand that this will not stop anybody from recommending the heavy barrel, aftermarket everything, $2000 target grade models, but that's perfectly okay, this is the internet and such things are expected. In between those should be some worthwhile recommendations as well.
Bushmaster and DPMS are the names I usually hear but the market keeps changing so what are some good reliable brand names that are good bargains these days? BTW, either full size or M4 style is fine.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

Check out my thread on the AR forum about "Under $500" guns. It should be near the top.
Who knows what AR's are priced at today as opposed to yesterday. If I were you, I would act immediately.
Quickly...A DPMS Sportical or Oracle is okay. A Smith and Wesson MP15 is better yet. A Colt 6920 is probably just what you want. As of yesterday, all were available well under a grand. Probably half that most places, for all but the Colt.

Thanks, I would not have thought of Colt even though I know they have a good reputation. Keep'em coming. This might just be the Christmas Santa shows up in tactical fur with a "special" stocking stuffer...

This might just be the Christmas Santa shows up in tactical fur with a "special" stocking stuffer... The past few shootings have not precipitated any appreciable rise in prices, probably as much because people are broke but...this occurred right as Obama was making a push for more gun control and specifically has spoke about an AWB and as the Supremes were about to take up a case about AWB's...possibly. Plus it seems that Assault Weapons were utilized. Anything could happen, but my guess is you will see a quick runup in AR prices. Please act quickly.

I was in your same position a few months ago. I got the same advice as has been posted here.
I bought the S&W M&P since there was less than 50 bucks between it and the cheapest one.
And..... it had a pop up rear sight, which I wanted as I have no intention of scoping it.
WARNING..... when comparing prices, not all come with sights.

Just as you thought, Bushmaster and DPMS would work fine for your needs. I own Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, and a few I've built. All fit the bill for the requirements you laid out. The Colt will cost you the most and will not provide anything the others can't.

Except resale value.

Rough Idea[price-wise] on a S&W M&P? It was some under 600 bucks at Cabela's in Ft Worth. Don't recall exactly since I bought 10 boxes of ammo at the same time. It came with a 20 rd mag and a choice of a 30 rd or 10 rd included in the price. I chose the 10 round because it is my pickup rifle and the 10 round is slicker handling in the cab. Later on, Academy had a deal on a 500 round box, so I bought that, too. They are amazingly easy to shoot well offhand with the iron sights.

Just be aware that the S&W Sport is missing a lot of the mil-spec features of most ARs - forward assist, chrome lined barrel, etc. If I were buying a S&W M&P 15, I would skip the Sport and buy one of their other offerings.
