Whats your favorite rifle that isn't a Winchester? Do you have one or are you fiercely loyal to the big red W? This is actually a tough one for me because my favorite rifle is always the next one. Right now it would be a custom Ruger #1 7MM/08 but there is always another one in the works.

GSPfan: Nope the pre-64 Winchester Model 70 is my favorite Rifle! They are safe, well made, accurate, strong, reliable, well balanced and handsome Rifles. They are just cool Rifles. And they hold a lot of bullets! They are the 1957 Chevrolet fuel-injected Bel-Airs of the Rifle world. I own about 5 dozen of them right now and I just might be buried with one? I own MANY other brands and models of Rifles and NONE of them even come close to my Model 70's in the "favoritism" scale! I do have two "kind of favorites" Rifles that I shoot regularly (a time or two a year) - I favor them for their amazing accuracy and reliability, and they look pretty cool: one is a Remington XR-100 in 204 Ruger and the other is a Remington 40XB-BRKS in 22 Remington Bench Rest. Good thread buddy. I think we've done this before, but I'll play along since I love most guns. I'm not just a Winchester snob.... This can also get tough because I don't really have any favorites. They are like kids to me and I can't bring myself to say I have 1 favorite kid. When I think "favorite", it always begs the question: Will I ever get rid of this rifle. Since we are not talking pre 64 model 70's, this is my favorite: Shotgun. I've won $1,000.00's with this thing. All those years standing in Annie lines next to guys toting $10-$15,000.00 Perazzi's asking me why I brought my "duck" gun to a money shoot. Yeah, I love taking those old fu cks money: My bowling pin guns. Because they always work with no failures (just like my pre 64's). I'll never get rid of my 4506 and the 4006 is a close second: As for "favorite rifles"......There isn't much better out there than the pre 64 model 70. I could give the rest away before I let the pre 64's go...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Jeez I didn't even think of shotguns, now that's a whole another kettle of fish:) Sorry, I was having a damn hard time finding a rifle that was my favorite non pre 64 model 70. I let this one go: CZ 550 American 9.3x62mm. It shot ok for a big gun: I hunted it, but hated the safety lever, so I sold it. Nuff said. For my screen names sake: BSA model D 30-06 factory sporterized m1917. I shot my best offhand group of my life with this rifle (1.005" 5 shot group) and it handled like a dream for those offhand running shots on deer. This one was someone else's "favorite" rifle. I found that out when I sold it on gunbroker and an old boy from Oregon bought it from me. I asked him if he wanted to see targets of how the rifle shot and he said, "I know it's a tack driver, it's my old rifle".....Glad to see that one go back to one of its original owners : I shot one of these bucks in a blinding snow storm in '09. He was running with 2 does at 90 yards and the ol BSA did the job with great precision: Been working with a good shooting Ruger M77 MKII .223 Rem: It shoots good, but I hate the 2 stage trigger. Even though I have it adjusted to the nats azz. It's just not a finely tuned pre 64 model 70 trigger.. Never will be either..

That 9.3X62 is a shooter BUT I give the guy behind the trigger a lot of credit also. A rifle is only as good as the guy behind it.

I love my Tikka T3 Superlite 270 Win. Killed several Caribou with it, a couple Sitka Blacktails, and a Cross Fox. It's been sitting in my safe unused since the AF moved me to Maryland. My Ruger M77 30-06 will always have a spot as well, I shot my first caribou with it, and my first bear. It's not a big one, but I worked really hard to get him, and he made some good eating.

I like Remington M/30 and M/722's, Springfield 1903 customs and Springfield 1922M2 to name just a few. BRNO .22 cal., Steyr Zephyr .22 and Anschutz 54 Sporter are a few more fine rifles.

I'd have to pick the GI issue Smith-Corona M1903A3.

I have 2 non Winchester rifles that I like, a tricked out tang 77V, ROBAR blueprinted and screwed a Schneider USMC over run barrel on in 308, I hate to say its my most accurate but it is in top 5, BUT I have 1500 early 90's dollars in it! Second is a C ring, Step barrel Mauser that a Col in the military had ziess clawmounts and some Austrian carve a stock for in the late 50's best I can tell, its in .270 Win and I like it... very best WinPoor

Good sporter 98 Mausers. Like my Husqvarna 146 I rechambered to 9.3x62. I have an Oberndorf "B" Sporter, but it has a pre64 70 bbl on it in 30/06 ctg. It's a great rifle too. But it's 1/2 Winchester.

Sauer, Steyr, Sako, or an old Mauser. Winchesters are great, but don't have the history, feel or panacea of the continental rifles.

I second on the husky sporter! I love how the knob on the bolt is moved lower and seems less in the way when carting around a right hand bolt on your left side. For lever actions I like the Marlin 1893,93. Savage 1899 and prewar 99. Also.

Sauer, Steyr, Sako, or an old Mauser. Winchesters are great, but don't have the history, feel or panacea of the continental rifles. Wow! What a comparison. After a Civil War, mass expansion of an entire country, Indian wars and railroads linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, all with Winchesters in hands of most of these people, to say there is no history is ridiculous. The whole world was watching America during these years and America didn't care what was going on over there. The history of the world paled in comparison to was going on in the United States. Winchesters were everywhere and involved in both sides of any conflict and useful in the hands of the settlers as they shaped a vast, uncharted land into a new country. If you want to use a word like "panacea", you might want to use it in a different sentence...

Panacea is an elixir cure all or magic bullet a cording to google. Browning supplied winchester with a plethora of designs and patents. Good job shrapnel.

Mine just a plain old M700 35 Whelen. Nothing special, but I just can't get rid of it. Been slog on too many hunts and shoots very well for me. Beyond that one, I'm not sure who else really makes rifles besides Winchester...

Bad statement on my part perhaps, but I don't have lever rifles so was thinking bolt action. Winchester sure does have a history with levers. I also don't shoot a Colt SAA worth a dip so I don't even consider them even thought they are a classic.

Or At least a little info on your Husky rifle... It was an old Simpsons import 146 I bought from a friend who runs a little gun service out of his muffler shop. ( insert canned laughter now). I was looking for a rifle with a minty bore (9.3 x 57) for this x 62 project I had in mind. Ordered a chamber reamer and on a slow day in the shop coworker and I jerked the Barrel off and got to it. Came out pretty good. 2010 went up to family ranch in unit 18 in Colorado. Was hunting one end of the hay meadow. Had a herd of 104 elk come out about 1/2 mile up the meadow from across the river. They traversed up the next mountain. I watched em til almost dark and headed back to the house. On way to house I walked up on a cow and a calf. And from the corner of my eye I caught movement of this bull. He kinda ambled on into a sort of thicket. I didn't pressure him (pretty dark by now) but trusted he might bed and be in the area the next morning. Started raining that night. At about 7 next morning it turned to snow. About 9:30ish I mentioned to son I was going up that hollow behind the house where I saw that bull. We started out. Hadnt really walked 3 or 4 hundred yards from the back of the house. (It's back in the woods kinda) and spotted this old brute laying in the snow with about 4 cows behind him. Snowing so hard all I could see was his brow times. Dropped on one knee, rested rifle on my walking cane and the rest is history as they say. About 90 yards. And yes I didn't let him get up! Shot him where he lay. According to taxidermist who did my euro mount he scored 351 and 7/8.

Here's my other favorite non-Winchester! Browning 1895 30/06. This year's bull succumbed to this rifle. And here's that Oberndorf "B" I mentioned earlier. With the pre-64 Model 70 barrel on it. Another 30/06. I put on the Lyman 48 one day at the shop.

Yeah I got a story about my husky. I bought it in Klamath falls Oregon. Had the guy bring it to the feedlot I was working so the wife didn't see me buying it. Took it to my buddy's house to have him get her tuned up under the radar. The gunsmith we both use ended up with it to mount some new bases, he knew it wasn't my buddy's as my buddy only bought Rugers. They both call me Doc. He told my buddy.......this is the best rifle doc has. I wish I could post the nice whitetail it got this year behind the barn but my wife......yep the same one.....I gotta hide my purchase from.....don't allow photobucket.

I wish I could post the nice whitetail it got this year behind the barn but my wife......yep the same one.....I gotta hide my purchase from.....don't allow photobucket. Long whip short leash huh? Now you go talking her down like that and I'm going to have to reconsider our friendship. I've met that jewel of a woman and she does damn good to put up with the likes of you ol' cantankerous Angus!! Fine English woman she is.

Nice rifles Kaywoodie and excellent elk story.
What bullet in the 9.3 was used for the elk. Cheap Selliers and Belloit factory ammo I bought on the clearance isle at Gander Mountain in Witchia Ks when daughter lived up there. 286 grain SP. One shot and he rolled over.

That is a funny story. Thanks for sharing!! Now you know why I only buy pre 64's: Because they all look the same!!!!

Penetrating sob though...

Wow nice collection, But I've noticed you've displayed some pretty nice Sako's here from time to time.

Nothing as fancy as some of the nice stuff shown so far,and I have had qute a few in the past. But currently this little Ruger Hawkeye in 257 Roberts has surprised me. I have only had it a month or so but it bunches shots at 100 yards, and holds POI flopped prone at 300 yards. Load is 100 BT and 46-H4350. I can live with it.

A couple more of mine. A custom build on a Sako action 7X57AI A Ruger #1 all tricked out with a 24 inch tapered octagon barrel, Ebony forend tip and really nice wood. Caliber is 7MM-08.

I would love a double rifle but other things (guns) keep getting in the way. I'd definitely hunt with it. Is it BPE or NE? What caliber?

It is a 450 3 1/4 BPE, these are the first 4 shots: 1st shot I aimed at the center and hit high. next three I held 6 0'clock, the quarter. Yes, this 450 lives in it's wood and leather case. Next to it's big brother, a Holland and Holland. 500 3 1/4 BPE: Right bar action side lock.

Other than my pre-64s I'd say Tikka T3 Lite. I've owned several and they've all been amazing shooters right out of the box. PS, those H&H shots are incredible! So cool! Eric

They're awesome rifles; just get rid of the plastic parts and they're kinda nice-looking, too. I replaced the floorplate/triggerguard and bolt shroud with nicely machined aluminum ones. Bob I also have a soft spot for my customized Ruger 77 in .30-06. Probably my favorite rifle.

Too many years learning with the wrong handed ones...

I don't know if this will turn into a favorite or not. I just picked it up a short while ago and haven't had the chance to shoot it yet. Once again a 1909 Argentine Mauser action this time in 25-06. I figured this would be a good fit between the Roberts and the 257 WBY. This is a tough one for me, and I am not sure this is it but to play along I would say my M1 Garand it up there. Bought it though the DCM (now CMP) for $125.00 and sent it to a gent named Roland Beaver in Bald Knob, Arkansas and he turn it into a national match configuration for me. He was a former USMC armorer and did a splendid job. Few give me more joy to shoot, mostly now only in my clubs annual M1 match.
