Not shoes, the dough mix left from fish breading, and fried in the oil for the fish.
Ever make it?
The story is, river fisherman cooked it up to feed the hungry dogs that whined for food.

this is how I make 'em. They are always well received. Hush Puppies
Ingredients: 2 cups yellow corn meal 1 cup plain flour 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk 3/4 teaspoon salt. 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 1 teaspoon baking powder 2/3 teaspoon baking soda 1/8 cup bacon grease. cooking oil to deep fry the Hush Puppies
Method: Mix all of the dry ingredients in a bowl. Add your eggs, oil, and buttermilk. Stir it all up until the ingrdients are thoroughly blended.
Turn your cooker on medium-high heat. I cook 'em at 350F. When it's hot you can drop your hush puppies in using a table spoon. Allow them to brown on all sides. They should begin floating when done, but if they don't, don't overcook them.

While I am a big fan of cornbread, I don't care for it with my fish. I have been known to cook the bought hush-puppies to eat with beans. Prefer home made, but sometimes you do different things. miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

I believe that it was the late Mr. Ruark who pointed out that a hush puppy "ain't nothin' but a hoe cake".

I love both corn bread and hush puppies. My wife cant eat them, she has issues digesting corn.
So, they're a rare treat for me.
I might just have to whip up a pan of corn bread today....
