I like the throttle shift on the smaller Mercs. Didn't really think it was a big deal, but after having it on the 9.9 on my sailboat it's nearly a must now.

Good advice but avoiding ethanol is the first defense for a small carb.

Big problem here. All our fuel is 10% ethanol.

Great Price. Getting it here is probably about $200.00.

Agree! I have the 6 horse Nissan (Tohatsu) and it is a replica of the Merc. Also cost 1,000 less than the Merc, just because of the Nissan over-lable (hint-hint).

If you read the reviews on the Tohatsu, you will find no unhappy campers. Long-life and durability/dependability/low-cost.

If you can get the Tohatsu serviced locally and get parts locally and the price is right then go for it. One of my fishing partners has a 9.9 on his Grady and we've put a lot of hours trolling offshore with it. I have a Honda currently and previously used Yamaha with no complaints. I'm partial to Honda and Yamaha but that's just me.

Has anyone had experience with these? I guess they made the Nissan line.

My dad is a commercial fisherman and he probably puts more miles on his outboard than he does on his truck.

He went to tohatsu's years ago and that's the only outboard he will run. Its not unusual for him to run 50 miles a day and 100 miles has been run more than once, but 20-25 is routine. He usually has to buy a new motor every 5-6 years and except for the first tohatsu he owned, they have all been 25hp, and the last 2 have had electric start with tilt-n-trim. Small luxuries for a 89 yo fellow. One or two of the early ones were 2 stroke, but now he only runs 4 strokes.

Back to the mileage... 20 (miles per day) x 6 (days per week) x 50 (weeks/yr) x 5 (years) = 30,000 miles (very conservative numbers)

Not sure about now, but tohatsu had the longest warranty, for quite a few years.

They are not as fast as a mercury of the same hp and they definitely sound different than other motors.

If I was to buy a new motor, it would probably be a tohatsu.
