I noticed Kimber puts a 1-12" which strikes me as odd. A 1-10" will stabalize everything from 150-180 grainer's whereas the 1-12" is designed for the 155's and under.

Anyway, for the Kimber 308 guys, what weight's are you shooting and what sort of accuracy are you getting?

Thanks...

Brad,
I have only shot the 165 grain partitions and SSTs in mine.
Both with 43.0gr RL15 shoot slightly under 1 inch at 100 yards, on a good day it will shoot those right at an inch at 200yds as well.
I have not had the opportunity to try other weights, I am only getting 2600fps with the above load.

It's nothing to worry about. My 1:12 300 Savage loves Speer 180 boat tails, so a 308 is no sweat. My buddy's Kimber Longmaster is sub 1" with 165 SSTs for three shots at 200 yards.

Brad,

I had a Winchester with a 1:12 twist that always shot 180 Hornady Spire Points into an inch.

Brad,

The boys at Sierra told me the 308Win in 12 twist will handle up to the 190gr SMK with no problems whatsoever. You will be be fine with the 180grNP, though I would prefer a 10 twist myself in the 308.

Thank's gents. I'm with Mtn Hunter... I'd prefer a 1-10" twist but it seems I might be overly concerned about the 1-12." I'd like to get the 165 TSX perking. 1-12" should be "ok" it seems...

How to your Kimber 84s in 308 feed?

My kimber 84 feeds reliably, but not that smoothly. I only have 200 rounds though mine, however, perhaps it will "clean up" with use.

CZ's run 1x12" twists in their 30 cal's...and I always wondered how they would do with heavier boolitz...but I never hear any accuracy complaints about it...but then I dunno anybody shooting anything over 180's either.

I dont think u need 1-10 twist in a 308. Maybe in an '06 and definetely in a 300 win or wea mag. I think you'll stabilist to 180 or 190 fine. I doubt you will be shooting 220grainers? I have a 308win with a 1-12 twist that I shoot 150's out of. It even shot 130 TSX's adequately. I'd go 1-12 all day long in a 308 win

My 84M's in 260, 7mm-08, 308 and 243 feed very well. However if one loads the box with very long handloads say at 2.810" then they are subject to the meplat catching on the front of the magazine box. As you know most boxes are just flat on the top edges.

It's the second round down that catches. I have to load them by pulling each round back as I load it and then they go down ok.

Recoil might force the second round forward and cause it anyway? There was a video here of a 84M that would jam. He sent it back and they said it was ok. He sent it back again and I have not heard what happened?

The problem is that the second round tips with the base of the round down and it lets the base of the top round drop as well and the bolt rides over the rim making a jam. It happens quite often to me at the bench as I like to do the testing by feeding them out of the magazine and due to the angle of my hands etc. I don't load them all that carefully as its just the range. Sometimes I have to stand up and push them down and back and then they feed. I might file the inside edge of the magazine box to a smooth taper in the front.

I am quite sure this is the problem. Of course it could happen with other rifles as well.

There are two rounds in that magazine and the one underneath is catching on that sharp right angle edge of the magazine box.

I think Brad is being very careful and for good reason. Those X's are very long for their weight and either they will work or they will not.

To add: My Kimber 84M Montana's only hold four rounds down and not five.

If they don't work for him he could always go back to the bullet that has lost some of its luster in this world and is sort of thought of about like kissing ones Grandmother is....(grins)

My 84M in 308 will hold 5 in the magazine, I have loaded my 165 grain partitions to an OAL of 2.810". I wonder if the Montana has a little less room in the magazine because of no floor plate, perhaps?

Oh yeah- I forgot...
I have to kind of move the rounds back slightly when I load the magazine as well. Not too much of an inconvenience, and I never have any trouble with chambering that first or second round when I start out with 5 in the magazine.

We want everything. Thats how stuff gets better.

I checked a M70 Classic and the front of the magazine box tucks under the feed ramp. That one should not hang up for the subject reason. Likewise a Ruger 77-2 tucks under some but a pre 64 70 in 300 HH is exposed half way.

The Kimber box really needs attention.

Yes 340, the Classic's hold five and the 84M Montana's four.

I usually don't go in for having more than 1 rifle in any given caliber, but I think I could go for a 308 in the Montana(yes-even with "only" 4 in the magazine!)
