My buddy helps to keep mice and bugs under control. I know some of you big tough men get the heeby geebies around my friends, but I love them in the garden. Except the ones with noisemakers on their tails.

Awesome pics. How many quail chicks hatched out and what species of quail were they? I'm currently in the process of restoring a huntable population of wild bobwhite quail to my farm. I've had one covey for the past 5 or 6 years but I'm hopeful I'll get another covey or two to call my place home.

Here's a picture of my Dad in his garden before he passed away. I don't recall how high his corn was, but once everything got waist high weeding was no longer a priority anymore!

Some years back, during a protracted "Spring Cleaning" , my little cattle dog started showing interest in a truckload of construction debris, slated to go to the waste disposal site.

[Linked Image]

A goofy young Gambel's Quail had set up her brood therein. I tarped the thing up and let it sit for quite a long time,...and just waited 'til they moved out into the habitat brushpiles they're "supposed" to nest in.

[Linked Image]

Funnier n' hell to have folks picking berries early of a Summer's morn, and a young covey explodes out from under,....that's a GOOD lurk for them, and I don't begrudge them the little bit of crop they eat.
The place is crawling with em', at this time.

Not fruits or veggies, but a little protein lounging in the shade about a week before sale day.

Price was really good that year and this was the calmest, easiest to handle bunch in recent memory.

jaytee,

Up where I'm at we only have California quail (I'm up in fieldgrade's neck of the woods) and I think all 12 eggs in that clutch hatched. My job keeps me away from the place for days at a time, I had seen the little peckerheads hanging around, a mated pair, but just thought they were after the bugs and some tomatoes and they had their nest elsewhere. I was checking them one day when I noticed the hen sitting and thought "I wonder if I'll be off or home the day they hatch?". Well, a few weeks later, I got back from a trip, checked and she was still sitting. Got up the next morning and she was gone with the whole brood. Saw them again 4 days later when I got back from another trip.

Good luck with getting some bobwhite started, they need help. Put out some brush piles, we have a number around us. Helps Keep the northern harriers, sharp shins, RTH's, coyotes, etc away.

I feed them and the peasants, I mean pheasants, across the drive from my RV and out back. Well, them and the white crowned sparrows, juncos, blackbirds, finches, etc. Our little residential area

I counted 30+ quail (broods were starting to covey up for the fall) in this pic

Their larger cousins like me too, young of the year in this case:

Nice lookin' burgers you're growing there in I D Hoe, Lonny. smile

Thanks for sharing the pics,

Geno

PS, us non-cattlemen types like you folks to get a decent price, but remember.... if it gets TOO high, folks tend to eat less of it. (what a game eh?) wink

More of the "neighbors"

Four legged ones, successful "hatch" for the WTD that year too:

That's an apple tree they're under.

The boy pheasants are like most other boys, spoilin' for a fight:

We're really gettin' ready to go now:

Sorry folks, no pics of the fight, it didn't amount to much, one of them apparently would rather go eat somewhere else.

Geno

Nice job Flem,

them collards look just about right with the snow on them.

Looks like a fairly successful year for you.

Thanks for the pics,
