If you were going to build a big(Mag) 9.3mm what would you use?
Been thinking this over and would like to build one down the road, just for the hell of it. 9.3x64 is tempting but, I'd like to do something a bit different. Would use a Mauser 98 so we need to keep COL down to around 3.40"...I'm thinking maybe .338 Win Mag necked up or .375 Ruger necked down...any others that I'm missing?

You should talk to Charlie Sisk. He's done a bunch of 9.3 wildcats, and has reamers for them.

I recall on old Rifle or Gun Digest article (???) by a Norm (???) playing with the 9.3x338 Win and one or two others.

I like the idea of the Ruger case. Of course a 300 or 338 Win mag case would much more plentiful.

sambo3006,
Ha!
What I do know (aside from B-S) from my experience in wildcatting with Charlie is it's extremely difficult to come up with a "new" wildcat. It took a lot of thinking to come up with the 9.3 Barsness-Sisk, partly because Charlie had already designed and built so many 9.3mm wildcats. In fact, I would be astonished if he doesn't have a 9.3/.338 Winchester reamer, and would be only mildly surprised if he doesn't have a 9.3/.375 Ruger reamer.
Another guy who's done more than one 9.3 wildcat is Steve Rackman, the guy who played "Donk" in Crocodile Dundee. I met him at the SHOT Show several years ago, and he's a rifle and 9.3 loony. This was shortly after Charlie and I cooperated on the 9.3 B-S, and Rackman and I talked for a while about 9.3 wildcats. He was somewhat surprised that Americans would create wildcat 9.3's.

A very short clip about a 308 Norma necked up to 9.3mm called the 9.3x65. Cool round, for North America a 9.3/338 WM would make more sense. I'm not sure what kind of rifle that is but I really like it a lot...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8v9zn_-Scs

Sisk did a 9.3 off the .350 Remington mag case and the 8 mm Remington mag case. I believe the B-S is off the .350 Remington mag. A little to big for the m98 but worth mention is the .366 DGW based on the .416 rigby case. Said to shoot flatter than a 7 mm Remington mag.

Funny this should come up. I was just playing around necking up some .300 Win Mag brass to 9.3mm last week.

rebelcountry,
Charlie Sisk has done a lot more 9.3 wildcats than those two, perhaps as many as a dozen.

Steely read my mail. Has Charlie done anything in 9.3 with less powder capacity than the 9.3 x 62? It's a fascinating topic, but at the end of the day it's going to be pretty hard to 'improve' the qualities of the Mauser. Which counts for nothing, of course Because everyone knows we need a 9.3 AR platform cartridge

Not a Sisk wildcat but old school Mauser. Less capacity than '62. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9×57mm_Mauser

Fascinating, thanks for that.
From Wiki
The 9.3×57mm is still fairly popular among moose hunters in Scandinavia (among hunters in Sweden it is affectionately known as "potatiskastaren", the spud gun, because of the slow and heavy bullet)
Spud gun. I like it!

Yeah, the 9.3x57 is a snoozer as factory loaded. In a M98 or equivalent action, pressures can safely be bumped up a bit.

He had it built. It's a Santa Barbra action,Paul Marqhuart barrel and Garnet Brawley did the stock work.

Yup,it's just a hair faster than a .358 Win with a 250 gr bullet.
