Nearly had the same thing happen to me as a 6 year old when I roped my first yearling with mom's clothes line.

Chris, your hatred of ranchers, and self admission of killing family ranch dogs is well known here.

Why don't you run play with the rest of the kids and let the adults carry on a conversation here in peace?

That is a freak accident but I can see how it could happen.

75 year old rancher still trying to get it down and messed up.

Cow must have slipped the rope or head gate while he had the chain looped on his wrist as he attempted to slip it above the calf's ankle. Other end of the chain was already on the calf's other leg.

Cow spooks and he is in a bad place.

Little chains with a 'slip ring' on each end.

Used properly they are harmless, just don't pull too hard(with the puller).

A calf pulling chain is much like a choke collar for a dog. When a heifer is having trouble giving birth, and will die, you have to pull the calf. That chain goes around the feet and won't slip off when you start pulling.

Always a good idea to throw an extra half-hitch on each leg.

So, the article doesn't say. Wonder what happened to the calf.

First ya gotta reach in and turn it around nose first, front hooves right beneath the nose.

Sometimes reach in clear up to your armpit.

Once your chain is on, just crank the lever on the come along and they pop right out.

We had metal handles for the chains, gave a better grip when wet.

Shhh.
If they can grill a steak and boil an ear of corn it's all good.
