What you have done is not nearly as important as how you have done it!!!

Think you're right about it being a drivers license number Mike. Used to be fairly common where I grew up for hunters to scratch their drivers license number somewhere on their probably only hunting rifle in case it got stolen.

Thanks for the comment guys. I will most likely order a letter for the rifle to find out the history of it. A drivers licence number makes the most sense. Thanks for the info.

I popped the butt plate and forearm off to check the numbers today. The forearm is a match and I'm not sure about the butt and plate, but the match each other. They are both marked "56".

Lack of a full serial number can indicate a factory replacement (we think). Reasonable chance a letter would come back with a note that there's a work order for unspecified work against it.

...or sent out to the owner or a gun shop doing the repair. It appears to be a factory replacement butt stock and plate.

Considering what a pain it is to properly fit a buttstock, did Savage just send them out to the owner? Forearm I could see, but I'd think they'd want the gun in to fit a buttstock.

I plan on requesting letters for both my 1899's this week. Is Mr. Callahan's current address listed on the shooters forum?

Thanks,
Robert

It should be but here it is again: J.T. Callahan, Savage Historian, P.O. Box82, Southampton, Ma.01073. Good luck, that's a neat carbine.

It's under the thread "Misc. Good Info" that's pinned towards the top of this forum.
