I would dearly love to see some of you on a military survival course. Along about the fifth day of you waiting for prime rib to fall from the sky, I'd just grin at what you'd be willing to eat. And like. Except that I'd have beaten you to it.

Meat is meat, boys and girls. It's a shame that some of the best parts of the animal never make it to market except in cans.

Some of you can make fun of SPAM, Viennies, Braunsweiger, and potted meat, but they are all made with good wholesome meat. That meat might come from a part of the animal you're not used to eating (like cheeks and tongue) but it's all good. Correct that: it's DAMN good.

Monkey? Hell, those damn sausages are bigger than mine, LOL!

Mild hypertension so I try to keep my salt intake down hence I touch none of it.

I forgot about the sodium angle on those things. Luckily I don't have to watch the salt intake, at least not yet. But I checked my 4.75 oz. can of vienna sausages and it has 470 mg. of sodium. That's a lot for a 4.75 oz. can.

I've eaten some pretty strange stuff in my life, canned sausage doesn't even make the top 50.

Viennas and Franks and beans could make marines sing hallelujah if it were that or an MRE! We were always willing to carry the extra weight in our packs because no one wanted to be plugged up for 3-4 days only to crap a cinder block!!

I was in the C-Rats Army and learned to like ham & eggs 'cause few others I ever met liked them. A little Frank Hot Sauce made the "green eggs and ham" quite good, either hot or cold, but not frozen.

Any C-rat is improved w/ the addition of baby dicks. Beanie Weanies w/ a can of cheese melted over the top cooked over C4 followed by a can of peaches is a feast to the grunt gourmet.

We called them Vieeny weenies. I ate a lot of them when I was in the Army the first time. Not so many the 2nd and 3rd time. I was getting separate rations then and could afford real food.

I buy a few cans and eat them with crackers just to remind myself where I came from.

kwg

1 of these days I'm going to get a camping trailer, which I will rename "hurricane escape module", and I will stock it with the necessities of life: Vienna sausage, potted meat, sardines, beef jerky, and BUDWEISER!

I keep a couple of cans of Vienna sausages in the truck, along with a pack of saltines. Useful when you get sidelined and don't get to a good lunch! I honestly don't mind 'em on ocassion.

Vyeenees were in steel cans originally, just like Spam. They came with a key glued to the bottom that fit onto a tab just under the top. You rolled a strip off the side of the can then removed the top, leaving about 3/8 " of the sausages exposed and you could pull them out.

Spam opened the same way.

Once they started selling up North. they had to come up with an idiot-proof way of opening them, so they went to aluminum and pull tabs.
