Who makes shooting videos in flip-flops anyway? Looks like he did a good job on that toe though, judging by the way it was just laying there...

I heard the goats too. You could hear their relief after the shot...
I'm reminded of that old saying. You can post 1000 instructional gun handling videos on YouTube, but fück one goat. . .

That had to be fake. Not that I doubt that there are people in the world THAT stupid and careless, but it had to be fake.

Oh, I don't underestimate the stupidity at all. It's the camera wobbling and moving around, but somehow the shot foot remaining so stationary as to have that shot-off toe still right there for a perfect glancing view. I don't buy that at all.

Being quick and having common sense are two different things. "Fast draw" is largely a Hollywood, dime novel concept that had little to do with the facts of history. Fastest draw there is, is having the weapon in hand before you need it.

Took a call here several years ago where a cowboy action shooter was home alone practicing his fast draw. He was using a Ruger Vaquero .45 and shot himself through the upper thigh. The bullet hit the femoral artery before it exited. Old feller had enough time to call 911, then he just laid down in the kitchen and bled to death. I think the first unit on the scene was there in about 17 minutes. The scene was quite a mess, felt really bad for his family.

Femoral artery is HUGE, doesn't take long to bleed out after it's been ruptured. Tourniquet might have worked, but it might not have.

Fastest draw there is, is having the weapon in hand before you need it. "Fast draw" is a very doable skill, but you first have to learn how to do it safely. Do it right, then do it fast. Drawing a loaded weapon there is little margin for error. So you have to train a safe draw hundreds of times until your safe draw also happens pretty quick. Sacrifice safety for speed and you'll end up with a groove in your leg. After treating a few people with "fast draw" injuries, I was a bit hesitant to learn the fast draw myself. Until I realized it's just your slow/safe draw sped up.

Then got into single action, but not the fast draw competitions they have. That's another game entirely. It just ain't for amateurs. The learning curve is mighty unforgiving.

What happened there? What exactly was he doing? Video guy says he is going to use his support (left) hand to draw a gun intended for a right handed shooter. It is hard to tell whether he put the right handed holster on his left hip backwards or whether it was on his right hip. I suspect it was on his left hip backwards because of the way the camera moved, because he said it was backwards, because I can see his left thumb near the gun when he points the camera at it, and because he hit his left foot. This is not really a fast draw technique but a pure stunt using a holster intentionally improperly positioned from the start. While people should know how to draw their gun from a strong handed holster weak handed, the purpose is to simulate drawing when the strong hand is disabled before the gun is drawn. So, it should have been on his right hip. Doing that is an acquired skill and it mostly places at risk things to the right of the shooter and the shooter's right arm. This guy probably could have figured out how to shoot himself either way. I suspect that the goats knew that from the get go. I can't find my English-Goat dictionary, but I think they were mocking him.

P.S. A real backpacking gun would have blown off that guy's whole leg and cauterized the wound.

That's for sure. Most of those guys have special fast draw holsters with a steel liner/deflector at the bottom, and even with that injuries happen. I'm with you; no thanks.

If the wound is low enough, a very wounded person has a chance to execute a low-skill move like a tourniquet. Plus, since he had a holster, I'm guessing there was a belt around.
What's he supposed to do, turn on the oven, grab a metal implement, find a You Tube video, heat 'er up and start jamming hot steel into a blood-vomiting hole? Thinking cauterize is not a viable option.
Then again, he could have blazed through the other 5 rounds and jammed the hot pistol barrel in the hole (thanks, Cormac).
