Thanks for the input so far guys. As mentioned I was out there 25 yrs ago,and loved all the "silly" stuff,and I think my family would also. I would like to get them off the beaten path and see some wildlife as well as some of the GEO features YS offers.

I went mid to late July last year. I kept hearing about traffic and crowds before we went but the only time there was traffic was at the entrance gates (maybe a 5-10 minute wait) or when a herd of bison was crossing the road. Go see all of the "stupid stuff" as Alaskajim referred to. It is ALL worth it in spades! Sure some places are a little crowded so get an early start every day. Lamar valley is fantastic. The thermal pools are amazing as is the grand canyon of Yellowstone. We saw Grizly and Black Bears, Bison, Pronghorn, Mule Deer and way more.... My family loved it so much, we are headed back West again this summer.
Check out VRBO for houses to rent This echos my experiences the two visits I have made. I originally was looking forward to mainly the wildlife but found the geothermal features interesting too.

Don't overlook Grant Teton NP while you're there. Seems everyone is hell bent on getting to Yellowstone, but Grant Teton is my favorite. I will also +1 this advice Teatons were great. During our stay we would drive out the road to Gros Ventu my spelling may be off but it's pronounced grove vonte. Each evening we would see moose feeding in the willows along the river. I would add that it would be a good idea to get each member of the group a set of binoculars. If on a budget the Leupold yosemites are good or I have found some pretty good older poro prism binoculars on ebay for as low as $15-$20 as I keep someting in each of my vehicles.

A spotting scope or tripod adapter for binoculars with a tripod makes showing everyone else in the family that bear in the woods that only you can see much easier than "you see that tall red looking pine tree? just to the right about 50yds and back another 20? see that grey blob? That's the bear..."

I went two years ago. We always stay in a campground in West Yellowstone. Only time there were long lines was when a bear or something was in sight of the road. It was chaos then.

Why is everyone so worried about "traffic"? It's not rush hour. You shouldn't be in a hurry to get anywhere. If cars are jammed up, it's because there's bears or moose or something cool to look at. Take your time and enjoy yourself. Spend at least two days in GTNP, then head up to Yellowstone. If you're looking at next year, make reservations now for cabins inside the park. Don't stay in Jackson and try to do Yellowstone. Stay in Jackson and do GTNP, then stay in Yellowstone for the rest of the trip. Oh and pay attention to the signs:

The car wreck on Sunday, caused by azzhst crossing the center line. Three vehicles one flipped. No serious injuries. Today was pickup versus motorcycles today with three dead. The [bleep] speed limit on northfork is fifty. The fatal today was caused by some azzzhat passing in as double yellow line blind curve. Hope he rots in jail forever. I hate going up north fork, nobody but me does the speed limit. Sick of the highway patrol doing nothing

I apologize for calling some of Yellowstones natural wonders 'stupid stuff'. That was stupid of me to label them that. I've spent much time in Yellowstone and GTNP and to me getting off the path away from the people is what interests me most. I dont handle crowds very well. Not everybody thinks like that, but to me seeing the tourist traps crowded by people took away the natural beauty. I hope you have fun in the parks and find a place to stay nearby. My favorite areas are Antelope and Lamar valley and that NE entrance area along with the Beartooth highway which just recently opened. I'd also recommend the Flagg ranch for accommodations BTW.

If you can get up to Banff. In Yellowstone- Minerva Terrace is a must see.

Been there last few days,in Cody tonight,JH next 3 nights. We flew in to Bozeman and stayed just north of Gardiner. If you consider that route, I can recommend a GREAT place to stay; best innkeeper I have ever worked with. By the way, Bison Jam is not a preserve. This caused a 3 mile backup, but we were on the other side and could literally have touched these as they passed my car

Drop me a pm, North entrance worked great for us. Be glad to talk to you. Crowds at popular places are getting bad. Park set record last year and this year up 15% higher.

Week before last, I'm partial to GTNP. Go find some trails and walk. Beats YNP this time of year IMO.
