Seeing this Ruger with a rib...... thought I would show mine again. It was on page 17 of this thread for a long time. Longhunter's pistol is the only other one I've seen with a rib. I built mine way back in the 1970's for the Houston Gun show to sell nickle and blue jobs and trigger jobs. Used a millet front sight which I staked in place before I welded the rib in. Have pounded many thousands of rounds down the barrel and its still my go to !!!

Is there somebody producing this rib now ?? When I built mine, you couldn't even buy a different back strap, you had to build it. Shortly after, they came out with a brass back strap. It held nickel much better than the original. Any way, good looking pistol Longhunter.

OldSmith,... My Super Blackhawk has a Poly-Choke rib on it. That's how it was when I bought it from a gun shop to take on my Alaskan Moose bow hunt. Also the barrel has been cut down to 4.5"

Just for simplicity/logistics sake, I only use magnum cases, and simply download to the desired level.

The vast majority of my shooting is with my mid-range load of 10 grains of Unique and a 240-250 grain Cast SWC.

Through the years I have noted that there is very little that that load will not handle, and very few guns that will not shoot it quite well.

Which HPG chest rig is that? I think I need one for my 29-5 5"...

It is the "Recon" version.

Cheers!

I just got off the Snake river tonight. Bass fishing. Caught a few small mouth from the kayak. FYI,

The HPG kit bag will carry a full size Glock 17, and a 22 round 9mm mag with ease. cool

Does it have to be a magnum? My latest acquisition, 2nd model hand ejector target. Built in 1932 or 33 and obviously carried a bit but well cared for. The bore and mechanics are pristine and the bore and throats are perfectly matched. The stocks are pre war Magnas, likely from a Registered Magnum as they are serial numbered to a gun that would have shipped approximately 1940. Front sight was a King white top post when I got it, but sadly it was too short and the gun shot 14" high at 15 yards with the rear bottomed out. I stashed the King away for posterity and milled out a Patridge on my lunch break. I haven't shot it a ton yet but it will see lots of cast bullets on top of Unique, Reddot, or Bullseye. Might even shoot a deer or pig with it.

Let me grab a loaded round and a projectile, snap a pic, and get it uploaded. It may be a bit. I am wrangling unruly toddler minions at the moment.

Kid,

Should you decide you want to move the Special, and want a magnum, or a rifle or whatever, I may have some trade stock that may or may not interest you.

Sorry for the delay.

Nothing fancy, but they plunk into a cylinder from a speedloader quite easily. I made a bulk purchase 10+ years ago from a person who was getting out of the cast bullet biz, and I am still shooting these things, along with some .38s.

smile

Lyman 429383 is a rn design that is basically a duplicate of the factory 44 special bullet. Molds can be had pretty cheap on the used market since everyone is into Meplats these days. It's similar to the on Mac posted but flat based and with a little longer more pointed nose.

I've thought of buying a two cavity and hollow pointing one side and using the other to produce plinking bullets since the molds are usually about 1/2 the price of a used 429421. But I already have a nice 429421 and a 429215 that I converted to throw a hollow point of about 205gr. Might make the HP my hunting bullet in the old Special, I see no reason why it won't work famously on the 125# whitetails in southern OK when kicked along at about 1000fps.

Thanks Mack!

I just had an inkling from seeing the carnage that it had a full diameter shoulder on that puppy!

Its kinda weird with that slope, but Ill bet that helps them drop easy for that guy.

Thanks for posting!

Yeah. I've got some Skinner sights to put on it, but I haven't got around to doing it yet.

I wouldn't mind trying one of them. I have been down the Marlin road twice. If I ever buy another 44 mag lever gun it will not be a Marlin.

I'll get some better pics of the Henry when I get the new sights on. I might even go shoot it. It's been so hot that going to the range seems like another work day.

What a great, enjoyable thread.

After many years without owning a 44mag revolver, I recently bought a new 5" M629. It feels great to be back, and it will make a fun companion to my Ruger Deerfield on hog and deer hunts.

The new Smith is shooting the Deerfield's pet load of a 240XTP over 23.5 grains of IMR 4227 very well. The only issue I need to work thru is some double action misfires with the old CCI Magnum pistol primers I am using.
