I have a chance to purchase a Pre-64 (1960) vintage Model 70 300 H&H from the widow of a dear friend.
The barrel and receiver blue is 95% plus, the stock has the usual dings and has had a recoil pad installed after it left the factory. It appears the stock was shortened just a touch in that process. The rifle wears a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5 x 10 scope. Overall the gun shows some use but still in very nice shape.
My friends widow told me to give her what it is worth. Can anybody give me any idea of what that may be?
Thanks

Are you considering it as a shooter or a closet queen? As a shooter it is worth maybe 500-650 bucks in there..IMO...short stock, handloading proposition ...you can sink lots of bucks into it to make it really nice, do you want to do that...or just have it around?

I think 5-650 for the rifle is way low.Especially with the scope.I would offer her something much more in line to the rifles value....She is after all your dear friends wife.

Thats a very nice gun to have. If the stock has been shortened just a little we have to know how much. If I recall they had pads anyway.
Galazan sells Winchester repro pads that look good. If the LOP with that new pad is anything reasonable I would grab that gun. Now the dings can be sweated out of the stock too. Depends how bad they are.
I would say that a dealer would get $900 at least for that gun without the scope. So if she sells it to a dealer herself she will get taken by most and maybe get $400 unless she says something like "I want to get this gun out of the house." Then she will get $125 for it with the scope.
Give her $700 for the gun with the scope. Then you will both stay happy.
I would buy it from what I read.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

Scope alone is easily $300-$350. I doubt you'll stumble into any 300 or 400 dollar pre64 H&H actions in good condition. I sure wouldn't take that for mine. I'd say easily $850 between friends and would consider that a very good price...

After being cut up that rifle is not worth anymore than $500.00. The only thing worth anything is the action to build another rifle.
I would not give anymore than $600.00 for the whole package.
A gun store would not give anything for the scope and would not pay anymore than $400.00 for the whole setup. They would then put it up for sale for $800.00 and take $700.00 from any poor sucker who didnt know better.

So where can I find one of these 'junker' 300H&H's for $5-600? I've been looking for one for about 3 years now and the cheapest I've seen on was $650 and that was just the barreled action. I've seen probalby 2 dozen in that time frame and most all were listed from $800-1300 for just the rifle. Sure this is retail, but whats stopping her from listing it on the internet and getting retail. I would give her at least a $1000 for the package. Not sure I could sleep at night by ripping her off like many on this thread obviously would have no problem doing.

Thats a classic rifle and even though it has been modded a little, it's still a historical piece and in a classic caliber to boot. You just don't see those 300 H&H's everyday, especially in a pre-64. I think $900 is a fair deal.
That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

I will buy every single Pre-64 in 300 H&H that you can find for between $500 and $650. Will even throw in a $25 finders fee for you on each one.

Granted I may under value it, but I look at it as if I worked in a gun shop and eliminate any emotional tie.
Gun stores I deal with will never give anyone anything for the scope. (Reason why I take the scope and rings off if I do sell to a store).
I think the barrel and stock worthless for vintage value after being cut, but then that's me.
I would separate the scope from the value of the rifle and buy it separate.

I'd give her at least $800.00 for the gun, and wouldn't bat an eye. Or, you can take advantage of your "dear friends" wife and buy it cheaper...
"Alert, alert", all the rest of you guys that know where these pre-64's 300 H&H gems are for $500.00, please let me know!!!
If the length of pull is 13 1/4" or longer, I wouldn't sweat it a bit.

I don't get that logic at all, Scope will bring $300 to $350 all day long here or anywhere else, so that's what it adds to the value. This is the guy's friend we're talkin' about, so should he cheat her cause that's what a gunshop would do? Bottom line, bare action is worth $500.00 give or take, throw the scope in and you're easily $850.00. I'd tell her, the gun would probably bring in the neighborhood of $1000.00 or a little more if she took her time about sellin' it, and tell her that $850.00 would be minimum unless somebody ripped her off. Anything below that is stealin'

Not advocating ripping anyone off...never seen the gun...telling you what it is worth in Houston on the used gun market being bought by someone who doesn't get their panties all wet when someone mentions pre64 Mod 70...admittedly the action, if in unaltered shape is worth 500 bucks, but without seeing the rifle, 650 is max...and the scope is worth but 125 or so on any used market...sell it to a friend and get a better deal, but at a gunshop...my prices are right on...You come out better if you don't get emotionally involved with any purchase, regardless of what it is...she will do better now that Winchester is a hallowed name no longer in business, but from a real used buyer, never get 900 or more..

The action, alone, is worth $500. Easily...
The stock, on Ebay, will bring at least $150. THAT's a better fair market gauge than the gun shop prices these days on that.
Scope? $350, easily.
That puts you near $1k. Anything much less than $900, and you are seriously ripping her off. Much more than $1k, and you're likely going to make her think you're giving her charity.
Tough call...
But I'd be going to the bank, if I were you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
