I have have been told a D.G. Rifle can't have a scope on it is that right??? Rio7 That's right. You aren't allowed to have any type of sight on your D.G rifle... You can only shoot from the hip too...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Just thought I would check with the people that know, I have a few big bore rifles and all but one have scopes on them and they have served me well, but then again I am no expert. Rio7

Actually, you are better off with a low powered scope than you are with irons.

Good info Rio, I use and have had scopes survive well on: 458 Win Mag 1.5-5 Leupold 416 Taylor 1.5-5 Leupold 400 Whelen 1.5-5 Leupold 375 H&H A.I. 2.5-8 Leupold 375 H&H 1.5-5 Leupold And have recently found out here on the 'fire that the newer 3X Leupold Big Bore scopes will survive the recoil from my 505 Gibbs firing the 600 gr Woodleighs. I'm with the group here that does believe more accurate shots can be placed with at least some magnification from a rifle scope, heck, that's why they have glass in the laboratory, we need to be able too see, hope the 3X lives on my Gibbs when I get one, that rifle broke the cam/?cams in two 1.5-5 Leupolds.

I think there may be some confusion over this depending upon what people are referring to.
A DG rifle for a sportsman should have a scope to place one perfect shot under the majority of conditions. The first shot when taking a DG species is the determining factor in the outcome of the events 90% of the time. It's critical to have a very precise perfect first shot.
The term alone "DG rifle" if referring to a rifle carried by a PH might very often have open sights. This is not a hunting rifle, but rather a last moment shot at very close quarters. Either by shooting a wounded fleeing animal, or when it pops up in front of you while blood tracking.
My DG work rifle has Warne QD rings with a low power scope, however that scope can be removed instantly. Then replaced with a rear peep sight in the rear base, or just fold up the rear open sight to use with the standard open sights.

I'm with both ingwe and JJ. My one time DG hunt, I had a low power scope with Warne QD mounts, and fiber op iron sights from NECG. Both critters were shot with the 1x4 power leupold shotgun scope, left on board. maddog
