I'm new here, have enjoyed everything. Need help in chosing a 22 rifle for my 7 year old. I have look at the Chipmunk, Henry, and Crickett. Interested in boltaction only. Any information on quality and acurracy would be helpful. I don't want to spend alot of money on a beginer. Have others to grow into later. Thanks to all who reply.

<br>You can't go wrong with either the Chipmonk or the Henery, I personally would go for the Henery or look around gun shows and auction site for used older Winchester 67's and the like also.

<br>Don't over look the Marlin Little Buckaroo. I bought one when my grandson was born and put a little scope on it.
<br>For years until he was old enough I shot .22 CB's through it in the garage into a .22 trap. From not very far I was shooting everthing into one hole continuously.

<br>He's gettin' to the age now when I'll let him shoot his gun this next summer.

I bought my son a Chipmunk for his 5th B-day. seemed to work pretty good.. Now he has 2 kids of his own, to train with this little rifle.
<br> Myself, I got a Win. 67 for my 10th B-day. Just picked up another a while back. Wish I would have hung on to the one I had back then..
<br> I'm enjoying the new one almost as much as the origonal.
<br> Still a great training rifle, and a good "shooter" that won't be out grown.
<br> The 67 Win. is the only 22 rifle that my dad ever had, or felt he needed..
<br> Some of the storys dad told about that gun are super. Like the time he was walking down a trail along Hills creek, and heard a rattler "buzz", Then it hit his pant leg. He said he jumped so high, that he was able to shoot 3 times befor he hit the ground. Pretty good feat for a single shot rifle!

<br>Actually the best way to do it is to go to a gun store with several .22's and have the kids hold them to their shoulders and see which fits best.

Found a crickett at walmart $100.00. 30" overall weights 2.5 lbs. Went to a local gravel pit to try it out before wraping it up to go under the tree. Shooting at a drink can was consistent accuracy. Hated to be the first shoot it, had to be sure it wasn't a piece of junk. Going tomorrow and shoot it on paper to be sure.

<br>I think that will serve you fine. My first .22 was a very old non-descript Remington. It must have been a shooter because after I got used to it I hit anything within 50 yards without a problem. I think most turnbolt .22's are pretty much the same.

One ajustment to the left and it was dead on at 25yds. 1/2 inch high. Countless number of hits in an inch. Backed up to 45 paces and made 2 hits on a 20 oz. bottle. Under the tree it goes! Hope to see BIG SMILES Christmas morning.

My daughter requires something really small and light ike the chipmunk/cricket/henry. I read a review that said they henry is really good. That is what I would get for her.

<br>A local gunstore had a Henry single shot in 17 HMR. What do you guys thing of that caliber for a first rifle ?

<br> The only thing is the noise. slightly louder than a 22LR and a little softer than a 22Mag.
<br> Less recoil than the 22LR, so you can see bullet holes "appear" quicker.

I hope everyone had a good Christmas. Of course you can see I got to see that big smile as I had hoped. That made my day to see how he reacted! We have been to the gravel pit a few times for him to practice. Very pleased with the Crickett. Andrew is still getting farmiliar with the sites. He can hit a 20 oz. drink bottle pretty regular at about 15 or 20 paces. Practice is the key. The rifle is capable of pretty good accuracy with iron sites. I believe it was worth the money. Jugding by the smiles it is priceless to me.

Glad to hear that, another child brought up properly and with the right attitude.

The .17 would be a good gun, but ammo is a lot more expensive than 22lr. I would recommend going with a 22 to begin with. More of a choice of firearms and ammo is more versital. Good luck.

I have the Savage, Chipmunk, Henry, and Crickett.
They are all good shooters, but the accuracy award
goes to the Savage Mk IV.
With a single shot bolt action that is so accurate, what more could you want?
