Good advertisement for that particular Buffalo Bore load. I bet they use it, too.

Wow, that looked like a 9.7 on the sphincter factor.
Well done Mr. Shoemaker
(Does this mean folks will stop ragging on the 9mm for self defense)

A grizzly on the Kenai river was stopped with a 9mm back in 02. Something about so long as you have enough penetration and put the bullets where they matter, calbiiber can be mute.
Not that I carry a 9mm for bear.

If he had died we would have had three pages of people saying he should have had a gun.
And when it was discovered he had a 9mm, we'd have 10 pages explaining he didn't know anything about guns.
Nice shootin', Mr. Shoemaker.

Mr. Shoemaker, great situational awareness, marksmanship, and bravery. You're one of a very few that could have done pulled this off.

yep good shooting indeed.
guess we're going to have to start referring to Phil as "9mm Buffalo Bore" instead of .458 Win.
must be a relief to know this fall you can leave that heavy azzed rifle at home and just take the lil Smith (grin)
on a serious note, I'm happy as hades everything worked out the way it did Phil, well other than the hassle of having to work up a DLP bear.
but it could've been even messier as you well know.
best to ya

Read the article he wrote many years ago about bear defense guns. I am quite sure in that article he stated for many years he carried a Model 65 3" .357 Magnum and had killed one bear with it. He then gave that gun to his daughter to be her personal defense gun and then started carrying a 4" .44 Magnum... To me his reasoning for carrying the 9mm instead of the .44 Mountain Gun seemed a little odd... "I decided to take my Smith & Wesson 3953 DAO 9mm, rather than the S&W 629 .44 Mag. Mountain Gun I have carried for the past 25 years, as the larger boars are usually less of a problem than sows with cubs." One just wonders if the .44 would have ended the confrontation sooner... ..at least he wasn't carrying a Glock... Bob

Shot placement tends to trump most other factors. A gun you can hit with trumps a gun with a lot of power that you can't hit with.

Bob i read that earlier article too, and as i remember he was using 180grain full metal jackets bullets in the .357. I liked the article so much i loaded a box or two of them. I need to shoot them into something to see just how much penetration they do.

I recently bought a couple boxes of those Buff Bore 147gr Hard Cast for my Glock 19. I like the way they shoot. I haven't shot any bears yet but if I was in Grizz country I think I'd be carrying my .44 Mountain Gun.

Doesn't the Second Amendment guarantee the right to arm bears? Bet Phil's glad that bear wasn't armed and he was... A 220 gr. Buffalo Bore 10mm round in an appropriate pistol would be more of a confidence builder than the best 9mm round, IMO. But, Phil knows what he's doing, obviously. DF
