Anybody know if a rumor I heard about an big Montana elk being taken last week being a potential world record? I was told it was netted about 430.

The hunter has chosen to remain anonymous for the time being but there are pictures of the hunter with the elk.

Saw the photo. I also saw and have a picture of another elk taken in central MT a week plus ago that green scored almost 420. Unreal for the 2 of these to be taken in such a short time.

Lets drop the world record and say US record. Even the artical refers to an american Elk.A 430 would be a toad.

When someone says they saw an elk that had horns all the way back to his rump, remember this photo. World record, NOT to his butt.
Beautiful bull.

Just reporting on a rumor(?) I heard the other day. My son said two or three of his hunting buddies said the bull was shot about three miles from where I live. Which by the way is in central (actually south central) Montana. I don't know if I believe the people that started this rumor but they are next door landowners. We do have a lot of elk and a good share of them are hunt-able due to State Land and Block management. If this rumor is true, the land this elk was shot on is owned by an individual that will let hunters walk in only. If I hear any more on this story , I will post an update. I could call the originator of this rumor and ask him, but I don't want to act like I believe them. Now, off to spread more rumors Ken Location---Yellowstone River breaks.

Well, if you can't be the shooter, apparently the next best thing is to start a rumor that it's at least from your neck of the woods...

I talked to my son this evening and he told me that he saw a huge bull opening morning in the exact area I am hearing about. I guess it's not impossible, and the pictures of the country side look the same as here. I actually makes no difference to me where it was shot because I know it's possible anywhere in the area. Last year a guy I know very well had a bull tag for the same area (north of the river) about 6 miles west of there and he shot a bull that measured in the 390's. I saw pictures of it. Another guy and I go walking 4 miles a day in several areas near by and see elk almost every day. It would be cool to say the Pope and Young record came from my home area. So, it may not be a rumor, but I still think it came from the Missouri Breaks or further north of here. Curiosity is killing me, Ken

It would be cool to say the Pope and Young record came from my home area. Be careful what you wish for, unless you want a large influx of people to your haunts. And I predict that rise in numbers will be in a place you've yet to mention...

callnum: I have NEVER said the "wuffs" kilt them all! You are just proving your own stupidity and dishonesty by making things up and posting them! I have said (and I stand by the fact) that the transplanted Canadian Wolves have diminished Elk Hunting (as well as Moose!) opportunities and tags in many areas and the Wolves have significantly changed the Elks ranges and habits. Please reconsider your policy of lying and distorting the truth. It diminishes you. Maybe YOU don't care though? Small men make things up to try and make themselves look or sound normal. Again don't try and distort the truth when it concerns me. "I" will correct you - and make you look bad! Thanks for nothing rmWf! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

It is amazing how big bulls are getting, now. Good management is paying off I guess. A 14-yerar-old girl here in Nebraska just shot a bull that grossed 428 and change. It will most likely officially beat the current state record of 409. It is a center-fire kill, but still amazing.
There was a 390 bull killed by an archer a ways south of my house as well as a 360ish one, if the second hand info is correct.
They are out there!

You did not "seen" anything, you "saw" it. A "creek" has water in it, a "crick" is what you get in your neck. Liberals with guns are nothing but hypocrites.

Kennymauser, How close do you live to Plains, MT? I got a pic of the record elk from a outfitter in the Plains area.

At least a couple hundred miles from Plains.
I think everybody thinks the elk came from the Missouri breaks which is north of me over 100 miles.
The first news paper that printed the story was the Billings Gazette which is directly south of the Missouri breaks. I live near Billings.

I almost forgot about that. I would guess a person could Google the RMEF and probably find out there. I have heard no more about it other than a game biologist at a check station here in Columbus told me that the elk came from the Forsyth area along the Yellowstone River east of me. I did get to the bottom (the origin) of the rumor I was spreading , and he hadn't heard anything about it. Oh well, rumors are way more interesting than fact. Ken

They are out there! An ex-Air Force buddy sent me the clipping about that elk. Hell, I didn't even know there were elk in Nebraska. That girl sure looked happy. Ken

If I'd shot it, it would have certainly come from a place as far from where I shot it as possible.
