All:

I am going to throw it up on Gunbroker in about a week with a $1 start. But before I do that, let me know if you have anything to trade for it. Use PMs for communication please.

Mostly looking for nice original Savages. No EGs in 300 please. Already have 2.

A pre-Mil 99F in 300 with no swivels would be cool. We can do cash up or down depending on what it is. Open to others. Also, Ithaca SKB shotgun side by sides. Jap made.

Again, use PM.

Will get pics up. It's an odd gun.

Thanks

Without any documentation or an "RD" prefix SN, how did you determine that it is a prototype?

All:

I will put up pics tonight when I get to my laptop. Cutting and pasting pics with my IPhone is a bridge too far with my patience. Lol.

Maybe a stupid question, but why would a 99C be a prototype .284 since the C came out in 1965 and the DL in .284 came out in 1964? Or is my memory again failing me?

All:

From another member here.

"The "Yankee Armorer" tag is from one of Peter Dowd's gun shops and Dowd was a major buyer at the R&D Collection Auction back in the late 1980s. I know that Dowd received a letter from Savage for each firearm that was sold"

No, I don't have that paperwork but working on getting it.

Fireball: To answer your question. I have no idea. My guess is an attempt to counter the Winchester Model 88 with its new wiz bang 284 round.

My grandfather was a life long pattern maker and at times they would build things for the shop he worked for. But that was for car parts. Sometimes worked.

Maybe it was an attempt at a recoil lug to help with stocks splitting at the tang.

Winner, winner chicken dinner IMO.

And the 284 is the best platform to test that on.

The 99C didn't come out until 1965 also, remember.

Is the serial number stamped anywhere on it, or just on the paper? Anything stamped on the buttstock or buttplate?
